On Friday, June 19, our grade 12 Knights were honoured and celebrated by their families, friends, and 天美传媒 community at the Graduation Convocation Ceremony.

Looking back at their time at 天美传媒, this graduating class embraced the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice 鈥� Presence, Compassion, and Liberation.

And as they prepared to take their first steps into the world as young adults, my message to them was a simple reminder of these three characteristics of Edmund Rice鈥檚 charism:

Be Present. Graduates, you’ve been shaped by presence 鈥� by those who stood beside you and believed in you. Presence calls us to stand with others, especially those on the margins, rooted in respect, trust, and accountability 鈥� the kind Jesus modeled, and the kind Bro. Bassett shows daily in the hallways. As you leave 天美传媒, I remind you to be present.

Be Compassionate. Through advocacy, service trips, and solidarity with the poor and displaced, 天美传媒 awakened in you a spirit of compassion. Compassion is not a feeling but a force 鈥� one meant to disturb comfort, compel action, and shape your future.

Be Liberators. Edmund Rice believed presence and compassion must lead to action 鈥� that Catholic education liberates as well as educates, challenging injustice and building a just, peaceful society. The world needs leaders of conscience. It needs you.

Our graduates are the hope for the future. As Blessed Edmund Rice said, “Have courage, the good seed will grow up in the children’s hearts later on.” They were encouraged that although the fruits of their efforts may not be seen immediately, the seeds will have been sown and will definitely grow in time.

Congratulations once again to the graduating Knights, with many blessings for the road ahead.

Funeral Mass for Br. Bassett

The 天美传媒 community gathered on Saturday, June 6th, to celebrate the life of Brother Ted Bassett, who had passed away peacefully on Friday, May 22. The funeral Mass was held at St. Peter’s Church in New Westminster, followed by a reception at 天美传媒, as family, friends, staff, students, and alumni came together to honour Brother Bassett.

For over sixty years, Brother Bassett was the heart of our community, and generations of students, families, staff, and alumni were shaped by his unwavering faith, quiet wisdom, joyful spirit, and steadfast commitment to serving 天美传媒 and the Christian Brothers. He possessed the rare gift of making each person feel known, valued, seen, and loved. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he transformed, the hearts he inspired, and the faith he strengthened. Our community continues to grieve the loss of a beloved Brother, colleague, mentor, and friend.

In Memory of Mrs. Rose Astorino

It is with profound sadness and deep faith in the Resurrection that we share the passing of our beloved Rose Astorino-Salzano.

For many years, Rose gave generously of herself to the 天美传媒 community as an exceptional educator whose kindness, compassion, and warmth touched countless students, colleagues, and families. Even through great suffering, her greatest joy was her family.

We entrust Rose to God鈥檚 loving mercy, confident that death is not the end but the beginning of eternal life. Please keep Rose, her husband Dave, and children Luca, Vanessa, and Valentina in your prayers.

Eternal rest grant unto Rose, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen.

Graduation

天美传媒 celebrated the presentation of the 63rd Graduating Class on Friday, June 19th at the Massey Theatre in New Westminster. Family, friends, and staff gathered to honour the Class of 2026 as they received their diplomas and marked the completion of their high school journey.

The evening opened with a land acknowledgement, opening prayer, and scripture reading, followed by the conferring of diplomas. Numerous scholarships and awards of distinction were presented, recognizing graduates for academic excellence, athletics, fine arts, community involvement, and character. Valedictorian James Roy Canil addressed his classmates,听Mr. Spanjers and Mr. Bouwman shared a few words to say as they round out their last school year, moving onto retirement, and Principal Joe Adams shared closing words of encouragement for the graduates to end the beautiful evening.

Good Shepherd Outreach

Our final Good Shepherd outreach of the 2025鈥�26 school year was held on June 1st. We met many people who welcomed us with gratitude and were pleased to receive the freezies and candy bags that we distributed. Many people look forward to the prayer cards included in the bags, as they offer comfort, hope, and inspiration during difficult times.

We had an excellent turnout this year, with many students willing to walk alongside those who needed us most. Through their presence, kindness, and willingness to serve, they helped bring dignity and companionship to members of our community.

I am especially grateful to the students of 天美传媒 (天美传媒), who gave generously of themselves throughout the year and consistently demonstrated compassion, mercy, and a genuine commitment to serving others. Their actions reflected the true spirit of the Good Shepherd and served as a powerful reminder of the difference that small acts of kindness can make in the lives of others.

Music Banquet

Congratulations to all of our Music Knights on a year full of learning, friendship, and music-making! We enjoyed celebrating at our Music Department Banquet on June 4.

天美传媒 Chamber Singers, Grade 8 Choir, Junior Concert Choir Provincial Festival Results

Three choirs from 天美传媒 were nominated to represent Vancouver Kiwanis at Provincials representing the grade 8 and under, grade 10 and under, and grade 12 and under categories.

Both the 天美传媒 Chamber Singers and Junior Concert Choir placed first in their divisions and the Grade 8 Concert Choir received an honourable mention. All three choirs will move on to compete at the Canada West Festival.

This is the second straight year the 天美传媒 Chamber Singers have placed first at provincials and eighth time overall.

Good luck to our choirs at the Canada West Music Festival.

Track & Field

The Track & Field season came to a successful close at the BC School Sports Provincial Championships at McLeod Stadium in Langley. After winning both the Burnaby/New Westminster Championship and the Fraser North Zone Championship earlier this spring, the Knights qualified one of the largest provincial teams in school history, with more than 65 athletes earning the chance to compete against British Columbia’s best.

The weekend was filled with outstanding performances, personal bests, and memorable moments as our athletes proudly represented 天美传媒 on the provincial stage.

Leading the way was Makaio Maver, who captured the Senior Boys Pole Vault provincial championship, while his younger sister Lexa Maver enjoyed an excellent Grade 8 championship of her own. Lexa won gold medals in both the High Jump and Javelin, and added a 4th-place finish in the 80m Hurdles, capping off one of the most impressive individual performances of the meet.
天美传媒 athletes were well represented in the finals across a variety of events.

Connor Lascu earned a bronze medal in the Junior Boys High Jump, while Remo Giovannao placed 5th in the Senior Boys 400m Hurdles. Luca Morello finished 8th in the Long Jump, Liam Soriano placed 7th in the Javelin, and Evan Woo earned a 7th-place finish in the Discus. Jada Waite finished 4th in the 100m and 5th in the 200m, while Evelyn Ashford-Livingstone placed 5th in the 100m and 6th in the 200m. Having two 天美传媒 athletes qualify for both sprint finals was a remarkable accomplishment.

In the hurdles, Chris Freire ran to a 4th-place finish in the 300m Hurdles, while Nicola Rogalski added a 9th-place finish in the Triple Jump.

The relay teams once again proved to be among the strongest in the province. The Senior Girls 4 脳 100m relay of Kyla Limon, Mia Belliveau, Betty Golding, and Shira Metzak reached the provincial final and finished 7th overall. The Senior Men鈥檚 team of Milano Peloso, Liam Golding, Remo Giovanazzo and Makaio Maver placed 9th.

One of the most memorable moments of the championships came from the Junior Girls 4 脳 100m relay. Jada Waite, Evelyn Ashford-Livingstone, Nicola Rogalski, and Lola Beliveau set a new BC Championship record during the preliminary heats. Unfortunately, the team was later disqualified, but their incredible performance and record-setting run demonstrated the talent and potential of this exceptional group of athletes.

The Junior Girls 4 脳 400m relay had an amazing race and won the bronze medal. Team members Alicia Barts, Betty Golding, Jada Waite, Evelyn Ashford-Livingstone, Jorlene Tsang, and Nicola Rogalski all contributed throughout the championship competition.

In the field events, Jorlene Tsang had an outstanding meet, capturing the bronze medal in the High Jump while also placing 5th in the Triple Jump, showcasing her versatility and consistency.

The team placed Brother Bassett鈥檚 name on their Jersey as a reminder of his legacy.

Congratulations to every member of the 天美传媒 Track & Field team on an outstanding season. We are proud of all that you accomplished and can’t wait to see what the future holds for this talented group of Knights.

Summer Basketball Camp

The 天美传媒 Summer Basketball Camp is a 5-day camp designed to introduce players to the fundamentals of basketball in a fun and competitive atmosphere. It is open to boys and girls entering grades 3-8.

Kate Stewart-Barnett

天美传媒 alumna Kate Stewart-Barnett, Class of ’21, continues to build her legacy. After winning provincial and national competitions in the steeplechase during her high school years, Kate took her talents to Michigan State University where she continued to shine. On the track, she became: a three-time Big Ten Champion, a two-time NCAA All-American, and holder of the MSU school record in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:33.21!

Her talents extend beyond the track. On top of her high level athletics, she is also keeping up with her academics, pairing a bachelor鈥檚 degree in Human Biology with a Master鈥檚 degree in Financial Planning and Wealth Management. This earned her a spot on the 2025鈥�26 CSC Academic All-District Women’s team. She is also a finalist for the prestigious Academic All-American title, which will be announced mid-July.

Next up for the 天美传媒 alumnus? The world stage. After a second-place finish at the 2026 Canadian Championships, Kate is heading to Glasgow to represent Canada at the Commonwealth Games!

Alumni President Chris Boyd recently attended the Edmund Rice Education Beyond Borders Congress 2026 in Uruguay, alongside Mr. Zimmermann, Mrs. Roder, and Br. O鈥橬eill. The congress brought together members of the global Edmund Rice community for days of reflection, learning, and renewed commitment to service.

Here is his reflection of one of the most memorable moments of the trip where Pedro Algorta, who was one of the survivors of the 1972 Andes plane crash, appeared as a speaker:

Pedro Algorta, survivor of the 1972 Andes plane crash, stood before us and shared the story of how he and 15 others survived horrific conditions and unimaginable odds for 72 days in the mountains.

What struck me most was Pedro鈥檚 humility. Any suggestion that he had done something extraordinary was quickly redirected. He insisted that they simply did what anyone would do to survive. They put themselves to work. They worked as a team. They focused on what needed to be done in that moment, one day at a time.

In Memory of Br. Bassett (1937-2026)

With profound sorrow and the hope of Resurrection, we share the heartbreaking news that Brother Ted Bassett went to his eternal rest early Friday morning, May 22.

For more than six decades, Brother Bassett devoted his life to the 天美传媒 community. Brother Bassett was the heart of our community. Generations of students, families, staff, and alumni have been shaped by his unwavering faith, his quiet wisdom, his joyful spirit, and his steadfast commitment to serving 天美传媒 and the Christian Brothers. Through his vocation, Brother Bassett embodied Christ鈥檚 call to love generously, to serve humbly, and to walk faithfully alongside others.

Brother Bassett possessed the rare gift of making each person feel known, valued, seen, and loved. Whether offering words of encouragement in moments of struggle, celebrating the successes of others, standing faithfully in prayer, or simply greeting students with warmth and kindness, Brother Bassett reminded us daily of God鈥檚 presence within us and among us.

He devoted his life to our shared 天美传媒 community. Brother Bassett鈥檚 legacy is the countless lives he transformed, hearts that he inspired, and faith that he strengthened. The halls of our school, our traditions, and our shared story bear the indelible imprint of Brother Basset鈥檚 life and love.

Our community grieves deeply. We grieve the loss of a beloved Brother, colleague, mentor, and friend. Yet as Catholics, we grieve with hope. We entrust Brother Bassett into the loving embrace of our Lord, trusting in Christ鈥檚 promise: 鈥淚 am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live.鈥� (John 11:25)

For anyone who would like to attend, Bro’s Funeral will be held on Saturday June 6 at St. Peter’s Church in New Westminster at 10:30am with reception to follow at 天美传媒.

Gr. 9 Retreat: Faith and Connection

Our Grade 9 students recently participated in a retreat led by the National Evangelization Team (NET), focused on faith, community, and personal reflection. The day included games, small group discussions, testimonies, and meaningful prayer experiences, creating a balance of fun and depth.

A highlight for many students was the opportunity for silent and personal prayer, where they could slow down and connect with God. One student shared it was 鈥渁 chance to actually sit, reflect, and share my thoughts with Jesus.鈥�

Students were also impacted by the stories shared by NET leaders, helping them see that faith is a journey and that God鈥檚 love is constant and personal. A key message that resonated was that 鈥淕od loves you for who you are,鈥� encouraging students to be authentic and open in their faith.

Overall, the retreat was a great success, strengthening both faith and community among our Grade 9 students. We thank the NET team for their leadership and witness

Walkathon

This year, students, staff, and parent volunteers once again came together in support of one of 天美传媒 longstanding traditions, the Walkathon.

Funds raised through the Walk-A-Thon have supported important improvements across the school over the years, including upgraded and repaired drinking fountains, partial funding for gymnasium projectors, and new speaker systems for the multipurpose room and fitness centre.

This year, students have identified the following needs for monies raised to go towards:

• New and expanded soft seating for the cafeteria
• Permanent outdoor ping pong, foosball, and chess tables for the courtyard

A Knight In Monte Carlo: Senior Formal

The Senior Spring Formal was the perfect way to celebrate the year together. From the music and dancing to spending time with friends, the whole night was filled with great memories. It was really special seeing everyone dressed up and having fun together, and it鈥檚 definitely a night we鈥檒l all look back on and remember for a long time.

Pursuit Kitchen Returns to 天美传媒

After a short break, Pursuit Kitchen is back at St. Thomas More!

Pursuit Kitchen is a unique service-learning program that combines cooking, sustainability, and outreach. Students work alongside professional chefs to learn valuable culinary skills while preparing nutritious meals using quality surplus and rescued food that might otherwise go to waste.

This semester, 10 天美传媒 students are participating in the program, gaining hands-on experience in the kitchen while making a difference in the community. The meals they prepare are donated to local organizations that support those experiencing food insecurity and other challenges, helping to provide care and nourishment to people in need.

Pursuit Kitchen is a wonderful example of living out our faith through service, stewardship of creation, and concern for our neighbours.

Students interested in participating in Pursuit Kitchen next fall are encouraged to speak with Mr. Mattiazzo for more information and sign-up details. We look forward to welcoming a new group of student chefs and community leaders to this impactful program.

Ateneo de Manila High School Visit

On Thursday, May 28, 天美传媒 had the privilege of welcoming student ambassadors and their leaders from Ateneo de Manila Senior High School as part of our international partnership and cultural exchange program.

The day began with a special welcome ceremony before our guests were paired with 天美传媒 student ambassadors. Throughout the day, students toured the school, attended classes, shared meals, played games, and enjoyed music together. Conversations, laughter, and shared experiences helped students learn more about one another’s cultures, school life, and faith traditions.

What began as a visit quickly developed into meaningful connections and lasting friendships. The experience provided a wonderful opportunity for students from both schools to broaden their perspectives, celebrate their similarities and differences, and strengthen the bonds of our global Catholic community.

A special thank you goes to the members of our Blessed Edmund Rice Team (BERT) and student ambassadors who planned and led the day. Their enthusiasm, leadership, and welcoming spirit helped make the visit a tremendous success and ensured that our guests felt truly at home at 天美传媒

Recording & Sound

天美传媒 alumni Nathan Rivers 鈥�22 and Adam Ponis 鈥�22 returned to campus on May 22 to speak with students about the making of their feature film, Starlight.

Nathan and Adam both developed an interest in film during their time at 天美传媒 and continued to pursue that passion after graduation by attending InFocus Film School. Since then, they have worked on a number of film projects, with Starlight marking a major milestone in their journey as young filmmakers.

The full-length film was screened in a local theatre this spring and was produced on a budget of just $1,000, an impressive accomplishment that speaks to their creativity, commitment, and resourcefulness.

During their visit, Nathan and Adam joined students in the Band Room during a sound and recording class to discuss the process of creating the film, from developing the idea to bringing it to the screen. They also shared insight into what it means to follow your interests beyond high school and continue building skills through post-secondary learning and hands-on experience.

Thank you to Nathan and Adam for returning to 天美传媒 and inspiring the next generation of student filmmakers.

Excellence in Jazz Performance Award

Congratulations to Jazz Band A for winning this year’s Vancouver Kiwanis Festival “In The Pocket: Excellence in Jazz Performance Award.”

Only one jazz ensemble from the festival was selected for this major award and we are very proud of the students!

Senior Music Knight at the Chan Centre

Senior Music Knight at the Chan Centre was an incredible event for the Music Department. Congratulations to all student performers. We were also thrilled to welcome back over 50 alumni to perform with our band and choir.

Elementary Schools Visit

The Grade 8 Band and Choir recently visited and performed at Our Lady of Mercy, St. Michael’s, and St. Francis de Sales Elementary Schools.

Jazz Knight

Jazz Knight took place on May 25 at Rick Bronson’s House of Comedy. Congrats to our Jazz Singers, Jazz Band A and Jazz Band B on an outstanding performance!

Knights Ready for BC Championships After Historic Season

The St. Thomas More Knights Track & Field team continues to build on another successful season. Heading into the BC High School Track & Field Championships in Langley from June 4鈥�6, the Knights have already captured an impressive six championship banners, highlighted by both the Burnaby New Westminster Overall Aggregate Championship and the Fraser North Zone Championship.

The team’s depth and talent were on full display throughout the season, as 天美传媒 also claimed titles as the Top Junior Team, Grade 8 Boys Champions, Junior Boys Champions, and Junior Girls Champions. These accomplishments reflect the dedication, perseverance, and commitment shown by our student-athletes throughout months of training and competition.

天美传媒 will be sending another large team to compete at the provincial championships. 55 Knights have qualified to represent the school on British Columbia’s biggest high school track and field stage.

Ultimate Season Wraps Up

The ultimate program had a strong year with both the junior and senior teams putting up strong records in the Fraser North league. The junior team competed in many tournaments, finishing in the top six in most of them. They finished second at the Fraser North junior Zone tournament, qualifiying them for the BC Ultimate Tier 1 Junior Championships.

The senior team started the season by winning the Burnaby Central Summit, and carried that momentum across the season, to be one of the top AA teams in the province. They won their fifth consecutive Fraser North AA title, and went into provincials as the #3 seed. They battled hard across the tournament, ultimately losing their semi-finals game to the eventual provincial champions. The team had a large contingent of grade 12s, some that were rookies to the sport, and many of whom had been with the program for five years.

We hosted our first annual Student Athlete’s Banquet this past Saturday and were so thrilled to recognize and celebrate the hard work of all of our student-athletes.

St. Michael’s Family Fun Festival

St. Michael鈥檚 Elementary School in Burnaby will be hosting its Family Fun Festival on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm.

This community afternoon will bring together students, families, and supporters for a fun-filled day featuring kids鈥� activities, games, food vendors, bingo, and a raffle. The event is an opportunity to celebrate the St. Michael鈥檚 school community while supporting their ongoing fundraising efforts.

天美传媒 will once again be offering a prize package of a free spot for Jump Start. Make sure to be on the lookout for this if you know anyone in grade 7 and will be a Knight next year!

Over the coming months, we will be developing a new Strategic Plan that will guide 天美传媒 for the next five years and we want to include the voices and experiences of our entire community: students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the school.

We鈥檒l be taking a close look at everything from our Catholic and Edmund Rice identity, to academics, student life, wellbeing, and how we prepare our students for the future.

Next week, we鈥檒l be sharing some more details about the process and what you can expect.

Shortly after, we will be inviting all members of our community to participate in a survey. This will be a key opportunity to share honest feedback, highlight what we鈥檙e doing well, and identify where we need to grow.

It is often said that 鈥渋f you enjoy your career, you will never work a day in your life鈥�.听 So, how does 天美传媒 prepare students for a personally rewarding career that will inspire, motivate and highlight their strengths and passions?

One way to encourage students to reflect on personal growth, career planning and the skills needed is to invite excellent presenters who share their knowledge and experience.听 Examples of guest speakers from this year include video game/screen time addiction (Cam Adair), Model Her Way (Katie McCullum), mental health & healthy masculinity (Bernard Piprah), drug awareness (Dr. Legge), LinkedIn & Networking (Kyle O鈥橤enski and Leo Recila), and the impact of driving under the influence (John Westhaver/ICBC).听听

Because 天美传媒 is blessed to be a part of a large network of dedicated alumni, there are many opportunities for networking & connection between students and alumni. A huge thank you to the many alumni who come and share their expertise through Career Days (speakers share about their careers and their educational journey), mock interviews (all grade 10 students participate in a 1:1 interview as practice for potential jobs), recent graduates (panel discussion about first year experiences, trials and tips for post-secondary success), and mentors (many grade 11 students connect with alumni as mentors for their capstone projects).听

In addition to guest speakers, Career Life teachers plan and deliver lessons on topics such digital safety & citizenship, cyber bullying, mental wellness, time management, how to write a cover letter & resume, identifying your strengths, financial literacy, post-secondary exploration and application process for post-secondary institutions and scholarships.听

Career Life teachers are always on the lookout for presenters and alumni connections. If you are interested in presenting or know someone whose expertise would be valuable for our students, please contact Yvonne DeWith (Career Life Coordinator).听

Building Bridges Through Faith & Culture

Written by Chloe Lorico, Krish Puri, and Evsey Uchaykin (Grade 10 Students from 天美传媒).

Annually, Grade 10 students from 天美传媒 in Burnaby come together for a retreat. This year was an especially unique experience as we focused on learning about different religions and cultures. In one day, we travelled around Vancouver to the Musqueam Cultural Centre, the Jewish Temple Sholom, and the Islamic Masjid Ul Haaq. At these places, we met with several community representatives who graciously shared with us about their faiths.

We began at the Musqueam Cultural Centre, where we learned about their traditions, knowledge, wisdom, and cultural practices. They placed special emphasis on the universal call to care for creation. Afterwards, we gathered at Temple Sholom where we learned more about the Jewish faith in connection to our Catholic point of view. It was there that Rabbi Philip Bregman educated us on the lasting horrors of antisemitism. Later at the synagogue, Rabbi Bregman organized for us a session with The Other People Panel鈥攚here two representatives from the Islamic community, Yusuf Siraj and Tariq Tyab, along with a Christian representative, Gary Gaudin, and Rabbi Bregman, answered our questions and emphasized the commonality between all of our religions.

Our last stop was the Masjid Ul Haaq where we learned about the Islamic faith and the importance of modesty. The mosque鈥檚 Imam helped us to understand the value of religion and how it can provide personal meaning, guidance on ethics, and cohesiveness within communities, ultimately leaving us with an impactful lesson.

On behalf of 天美传媒, we would like to thank all the leaders and representatives who helped us grow in our understanding of what it means to walk in the path of holiness. Dialogue between different faiths fosters peace, reduces conflict, and helps build mutual respect in our increasingly diverse world.

As students in a Catholic community, regardless of our backgrounds and beliefs, it is important to expand our worldviews, especially now, in times of war, hate, and turmoil鈥攆or a world of peace is a world built on understanding and listening. In modern society, we must work on making 鈥渆very effort to do what leads to peace鈥︹�� (Romans 14:19). This starts with our generation. This starts with us.

Grade 11 Retreat: Camp Charis

Our Grade 11 students recently participated in an overnight retreat at Camp Charis, centered on the themes of servant leadership and community. The retreat provided students with a meaningful opportunity to step away from their daily routines and focus on personal growth, reflection, and connection with one another.

Throughout the retreat, students engaged in a variety of activities including team-building exercises, small group discussions, affirmation activities and moments of prayer and reflection. These experiences encouraged students to deepen their understanding of what it means to lead through service鈥攑utting others first, building up their peers, and striving to live out their faith in everyday life.

As our Grade 11 students prepare to enter their senior year, this retreat served as an important step in forming them as leaders within our school community鈥攍eaders who are called not only to lead, but to serve with humility, compassion, and purpose.

A special thank you to our chaplain, Father Yoon, for his guidance, leadership, and continued dedication to the spiritual life of our school. His presence and commitment made a lasting impact on all who attended.

Gr.9 Retreat: Faith and Connection

Our Grade 9 students recently participated in a retreat led by the National Evangelization Team (NET), focused on faith, community, and personal reflection. The day included games, small group discussions, testimonies, and meaningful prayer experiences, creating a balance of fun and depth.

A highlight for many students was the opportunity for silent and personal prayer, where they could slow down and connect with God. One student shared it was 鈥渁 chance to actually sit, reflect, and share my thoughts with Jesus.鈥�

Students were also impacted by the stories shared by NET leaders, helping them see that faith is a journey and that God鈥檚 love is constant and personal. A key message that resonated was that 鈥淕od loves you for who you are,鈥� encouraging students to be authentic and open in their faith.

Overall, the retreat was a great success, strengthening both faith and community among our Grade 9 students. We thank the NET team for their leadership and witness

Walkathon

Our annual 天美传媒 Walkathon is here, and we are excited to come together once again to continue a tradition that has been part of 天美传媒 for many, many years.

This year, the goal is to raise $40,000! Every dollar raised will directly go toward improving student spaces at the school. Some suggestions that have been made includes new softer seating for the cafeteria, as well as permanent outdoor ping pong, foosball, and chess tables in the courtyard.

This will be a school-wide event where all students will be involved, have tons of fun, and help make this year鈥檚 Walkathon a huge success.

To make things even more exciting, we鈥檒l be offering some great prizes and school-wide incentives along the way:

• The top fundraiser each week for the next three weeks will receive a $100 gift card
• The overall top 3 student fundraisers will win a pizza party for themselves plus 5 friends
• If our school reaches the halfway mark of $20,000 by May 22, the entire school earns a Jersey Day! (note: no jeans or sweatpants)
• House Points will also be awarded throughout the campaign, giving students another way to support their House while fundraising

Living Jesus in Our Hearts Through Solidarity

As 天美传媒 begins to conclude another school year, our community will spend the months of May and June focusing on the Catholic Social Teaching of Solidarity. Throughout the year, students and staff have reflected on how we are called to live out our faith through action, and our final focus reminds us that we are all connected as one human family.

Solidarity calls us to stand with and support others, especially those who are vulnerable or in need. It encourages us to recognize the dignity of every person and to respond with compassion, kindness, justice, and service.

As part of this initiative, students and staff are invited to participate in our Solidarity Ring Activity located in the front foyer. Participants will create a paper 鈥淪olidarity Ring鈥� by writing their name or initials along with a person, group, cause, or issue they stand in solidarity with. The rings will then be connected together to form a visual reminder that we are stronger when we support one another.

We encourage all members of the 天美传媒 community to take time during these final months of the school year to reflect on how they can continue to 鈥淟ive Jesus in Our Hearts鈥� through solidarity, compassion, and service to others.

Expo for Life Conference

This past March, students from 天美传媒 had the privilege of attending the annual CISVA Expo for Life Conference, a gathering that brings together Catholic schools from across the Lower Mainland to celebrate faith, leadership, and service.

天美传媒 was especially proud to have members of our Reverence for Life (R4L) team play an active role in the conference. In the weeks leading up to the event, several of our students helped organize, plan, and lead key aspects of the day鈥攄emonstrating strong leadership and a commitment to living out their faith in action.

Throughout the conference, students engaged in a variety of meaningful sessions that challenged them to think critically about human dignity, service, and leadership. Students heard from Justin Milad, who shared about his work with the Men鈥檚 Hostel, offering insight into serving those experiencing homelessness. Raphael Freston from Development and Peace invited students to reflect on global justice and solidarity, while Kimberly Bromley spoke on the important work of supporting mothers through Pregnancy Concerns. Students also participated in a session on pro-life apologetics led by the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform, and heard from Blenda Ann Furlan of Providence Health Care, who offered perspective on compassionate care within the healthcare system.

These sessions emphasized forming young people who are 鈥渟piritually grounded, mission-oriented, and equipped to live their faith boldly鈥濃�攁 message that strongly resonated with our students.

The Expo for Life Conference was a great success and a powerful witness to the leadership of 天美传媒 students, who continue to model what it means to live Jesus in their hearts through service, compassion, and courage.

Supporting the Needy in Burnaby

This week, 天美传媒 students with Mr. Mattiazzo organized a donation drive for hygiene products and business casual clothing.

They visited the Burnaby Emergency Shelter and delivered 15 interview kits to support individuals in our local community facing barriers to employment. Each kit is meant to improve interview preparation l to help promote confidence and opportunity.

Art

On March 3rd, senior 天美传媒 art students had the opportunity to travel downtown and immerse themselves in a wide range of artistic experiences. Upon arrival, they visited the Vancouver Art Gallery, where they received a private tour of the exhibition We Who Have Known Tides: Indigenous Art from the Collection. This exhibit featured Indigenous artworks across various mediums, all highlighting a deep connection to the Pacific Ocean. It explored how proximity to water has shaped Indigenous culture in Canada and their ways of life, while reflecting on the ever-changing nature of the tides.

Following the tour, students participated in an immersive workshop led by gallery staff, where they created their own stop-motion films inspired by the ocean and themes from the exhibit. They learned a variety of new techniques and really enjoyed the creative process. Before leaving, the group also explored That Green Ideal: Emily Carr and the Idea of Nature, an exhibit focused on the relationship between land and artistic expression.

After lunch, students visited the Pendulum Gallery, where they viewed Under the Canopy, a collection centered on trees and forest landscapes. Overall, the students had an enriching and memorable day, and they would like to thank Ms. Codd for organizing such a thoughtful and engaging field trip.

Whistler Music Festival

Congratulations to our Senior Band and Senior Choir on a successful tour to Whistler. The students participated in the Con Brio Festival and received gold ratings!

They were also part of massed ensembles of over 1,000 students performing together!

Gr. 8 Boys Basketball

Towards the end of February, the Grade 8 Boys Basketball team wrapped up a season that was defined by resilience, hard work, constant improvement and camaraderie.

The year started off slow, the team faced tough competition early on, taking some time to find their rhythm and chemistry. As the season progressed and players returned from illness and trips, their steady improvement every day began to show. Practices became sharper and confidence grew.

Through the middle of the season, the team was in full stride and went on a bit of a winning streak. By the time zone playoffs arrived, this was a changed team. Going up against the #1 seed who were undefeated in our league, the Gr. 8 Knights delivered their strongest performance of the season, pushing the opponent to the brink of elimination. Ultimately, they came just one point shy of coming out on top, ending their chances of a provincial berth in a hard-fought game with a result that could have gone either way up until the very last minute.

This game was a reflection of how far the boys had come, especially considering their first matchup with this opponent resulted in a lopsided loss. Despite this, the team stayed strong and rounded out the Fraser North Zone playoffs by winning their last three games of the season to finish in 3rd place.

We are excited to continue watching the development of these young Knights on and off the court, keeping an eye on what the future holds for them here at 天美传媒.

天美传媒 Track and Field Championship Season Ahead

The 天美传媒 Track & Field team is gearing up for an exciting championship run as the season reaches its peak. On May 6th and 8th, our athletes will compete at the Burnaby New West League Championships at Swangard Stadium, looking to build on last year鈥檚 outstanding performance that saw 天美传媒 bring home multiple banners including overall championships.

The top four athletes in each event will advance to the Fraser North Championships at Percy Perry Stadium on May 12th and 13th, where the team will once again aim for a strong showing and build on the championship from last year.

From there, qualifying athletes will move on to the provincial stage at the BC High School Championships, held at McLeod Athletic Park from June 4th鈥�6th. Competing against the best in the province, our athletes will represent 天美传媒 with pride, determination, and excellence.

We wish all of our Knights the best of luck as they chase another championship season!

Class of ’23: Katrina Mrzljak and Helen Xu

天美传媒 is proud to celebrate alumni Katrina Mrzljak 鈥�23 and Helen Xu 鈥�23, who recently earned 3rd place in Canada at the 2026 L鈥橭r茅al Brandstorm innovation competition. Alongside teammate Khaldoun Fansa, the group developed 鈥淢iu Miu Dualit茅,鈥� a luxury unisex fragrance line featuring a disruptive bottle design and an innovative sustainability incentive.

What began as a spontaneous decision between friends evolved into months of brainstorming, creativity, and collaboration. Competing against more than 300 teams across Canada, the team advanced to the national finals in Montr茅al, where they were recognized as one of the country鈥檚 top student innovation teams.

Katrina and Helen credited mentors J茅r茅my Choquette, Julie Dulude, Aleksandra S., and Chlo茅 Cadieux for their support and guidance throughout the experience. Their achievement is a testament to the power of creativity, collaboration, and having the confidence to pursue an idea beyond the classroom.

As we round out the winter season of competitive sports, varsity girls鈥� basketball coach and Vice Principal, Ms. Cassie Lauang, reflects on what the tournament means to communities and the significance of high school sports for athletes, coaches and supporters.

This was written just before the start of Provincials, which would ultimately result with the girls coming in second place for a silver medal finish.

The gym always feels quieter the week before Provincials.

It sounds the same though.

The bounce of the basketballs echo. The shoes still squeak. The bounces off the rim and the clean swishes through the nylon are still there鈥� but there鈥檚 something buzzing in the air that signals something has shifted.

The week before the Provincial tournament does feel a bit heavier, not because of what still needs to be done or taught but because everyone can sense that there is something meaningful approaching and it鈥檚 really not just about basketball. It鈥檚 about young people standing close to a moment that feels bigger than they鈥檙e used to carrying and the quiet work of helping them believe that they can step into it without losing themselves if things don鈥檛 go the way they hope…

Living the Dignity of the Human Person

As we begin the month of March, our 天美传媒 community continues its focus on Catholic Social Teaching, with particular attention to the Dignity of the Human Person. This foundational principle reminds us that every human life is sacred 鈥� created in the image and likeness of God 鈥� and deserving of respect from conception to natural death.

This focus is also one of the Blessed Edmund Rice Essential Elements, calling us to stand in solidarity with the vulnerable and to build communities where each person is valued and heard. It beautifully coincides with our Lenten journey, as we reflect on the value of life and Christ鈥檚 ultimate act of love and sacrifice for humanity.

Throughout March and into April, students will engage in prayer, Reverence for Life conferences, classroom discussions, reflective activities, and initiatives led by our Blessed Edmund Rice Team. Together, we hope not only to learn more about this teaching, but to actively live it 鈥� in our words, in our online presence, in our relationships, and in the way we serve others.

May this season of Lent continue to form us as a community that sees Christ in one another and upholds the dignity of every person, both within our school and beyond.

鈥淟ive Jesus in our hearts… forever.鈥�

Faith In Action: Service and College Pathways

On Friday, February 6th, our Senior students had the opportunity to take part in a day of faith, service, and exploration within our wider Catholic community.

Our first stop was Catholic Men’s Charities, where students dropped off donations collected from our school community and learned more about this incredible ministry led by Director Justin Milad. Students were given a tour and gained a deeper understanding of the dignity of the human person and the importance of walking alongside those experiencing hardship. It was a meaningful opportunity to see Catholic Social Teaching lived out in a concrete and compassionate way.

We then visited Corpus Christi College and St. Mark’s College, located on the campus of University of British Columbia. Students learned about post-secondary opportunities within a faith-based university setting and explored what it means to continue growing intellectually and spiritually after high school. It was inspiring for our students to see how Catholic higher education integrates academic excellence with faith formation and community life.

We concluded the day by partnering with students from Corpus Christi to prepare sandwiches for The Door Is Open, a ministry serving those in need in Vancouver鈥檚 Downtown Eastside. This shared act of service beautifully captured the heart of the day 鈥� learning, faith, and action working together.

The experience was a powerful reminder that our Catholic education extends beyond the classroom and continues well after graduation. Students interested in exploring university opportunities are encouraged to look up Corpus Christi College and St. Mark鈥檚 College to learn more about the programs and community they offer.

Reverence for Life: Isabella Comuzzi

Isabella Comuzzi reflects on her experience helping to organize a Reverence for Life Expo that brought together hundreds of attendees for thoughtful and respectful dialogue. She shares how the event challenged common stereotypes and demonstrated that open, informed conversations can foster greater understanding.

For Isabella, reverence for life is not about politics or popularity, but about affirming the inherent dignity of every person. She emphasizes that choosing a pro-life stance means choosing compassion, standing with the vulnerable, and recognizing the value of every human life.

Thank you to all our parents for your feedback, ideas, and ongoing support as we roll out our Parent Participation Program. Many of your suggestions have been added to the program.

Volunteer sign-ups will open in late March / early April, with a staggered release to ensure a smooth and fair process:

Day 1: Current Grade 11 & 10 families
Day 2: Current Grade 9 & 8 families
Day 3: Incoming Grade 8 families

Each family will receive their own login details prior to their designated release date.

If you are interested in applying for a Lead or Coordinator role, please complete the Google Form using听.

1. Leads work with all coordinators within an area and communicate directly with the PPP Lead.
2. Coordinators support hourly volunteers and serve as the main point of contact for their specific role
   (e.g., Athletics Lead 鈥� Ultimate Coordinator 鈥� Parent Driver Volunteer).

Selections for Lead and Coordinator positions will be made and families notified before the OnVolunteers.com sign-ups open.

Thank you to Sofia Sales, a Gr. 11 student, for coordinating (with Mrs. DeWith) volunteers as reading mentors for primary students at 12th Avenue Elementary School. 天美传媒 Gr. 8-10 volunteers will read with their buddies on 5 upcoming Wednesdays.

Mrs. DeWith and the 12th Avenue librarian were so impressed with how the 天美传媒 students interacted and supported their new little buddies! What a great example of service in a very practical way.

Strangers giving to strangers; for women alone and frightened, living with memories most of us could never endure, men doing whatever it takes to survive another endless and tormented day of life on the street, all of them suffering beyond anything we could ever imagine.

天美传媒 Mission Integration Visit

On Monday, February 23, members of the 天美传媒 Mission Integration Committee had the privilege of visiting an Indigenous Education Centre, a temple, and a mosque to connect with faith leaders across our broader community.

This visit was part of 鈥淭he Other People鈥� initiative, which arose from the shared concerns of prominent BC faith and cultural leaders. The initiative seeks to address growing concerns around hate, racism, and misunderstanding in Canada through meaningful dialogue and relationship-building.

These interactive programs are designed to enhance cultural competence and help participants thoughtfully navigate complex social issues. By engaging directly with leaders from Asian/Buddhist, Black, Christian, Indigenous, Jewish, Muslim, and Sikh communities, we are challenged to examine personal assumptions, question media narratives, and develop a deeper appreciation for the lived experiences of others.

We are grateful for the relationships being formed and look forward to continuing this important work of dialogue, reconciliation, and bridge-building.

Supporting the Vancouver Men’s Shelter

On Friday, February 27th, Grade 12 student leaders Arianna Ogilvie and Caleigh Wong put their faith into action by preparing homemade brownies for the Catholic Men’s Shelter, a ministry that welcomes and supports over 100 men each night in Vancouver.

Along with the baked goods, students also donated mugs for shelter patrons. We are especially grateful to Justin Milad, Director of the shelter, who personally picked up the donations on his way to serve the evening community. His leadership and dedication continue to inspire our students as they learn what it means to live out the Gospel through service.

Senior Art Studio: Emily Carr Workshop

In the first week of March, our Senior Art Studio class will be heading to the Vancouver Art Gallery for an Emily Carr workshop and guided tour. Students will also explore the Pendulum Art Gallery and CICA, learning about local artists and contemporary work within our own community.

As the final Art excursion of the year, this trip offers a meaningful opportunity for students to experience art and culture firsthand, engage with professional spaces, and deepen their understanding of the creative landscape around them.

Congratulations to Jazz A and Jazz B for outstanding performances at the Kiwanis Jazz Festival! Students had the opportunity to work with renowned jazz adjudicators and hear other schools perform.

Record-Breaking Performance for 天美传媒鈥檚 Jada Waite

St. Thomas More Catholic High School is proud to celebrate Grade 9 student-athlete Jada Waite, who continues to be successful on the track. This past weekend, Jada competed at the Canadian Indoor Track & Field National Championships in Toronto and delivered a great performance in the 60m sprint. She ran a blazing 7.75 seconds, earning the title of 2nd fastest U16 60m time in Canada and the fastest time ever recorded in British Columbia for her age group.

In doing so, Jada broke the previous BC record of 7.84 seconds 鈥� setting a new provincial standard and achieving a personal best in the process.
Her accomplishments do not stop there. Jada is also:

• BC High School Champion 鈥� 4x100m Relay

We are proud of Jada鈥檚 accomplishments and look forward to watching her continued growth and success in the years ahead.

Senior Girls Basketball

Congratulations to our varsity girls for finishing second in the BC AA Provincial Final, the best ever finish for our girls鈥� program. Coming in seeded #3, they took down St. Jean Brebeuf, #6 Pacific Academy and #2 Credo Christian on the way to the final. They showcased heart and toughness all the way through and we are proud of their battle against Holy Cross in the final.

Special congratulations goes out to Demicah Arnaldo who was named Player of the Game for the finals and first team all star, Mia Beliveau who was named Inspiring Bandits Award Scholarship and first team all star and Kyla Limon who was named the Defensive Player of the Tournament. Congratulations to all our Knights for their silver medal and an outstanding season and good luck to the Varsity Boys鈥� basketball team as they start their provincial tournament this week.

Lacrosse Team Reclaims Callahan Cup

On Tuesday February 17, the 天美传媒 Varsity Field Lacrosse team reclaimed the Callahan Cup, defeating Vancouver College 9-7 to capture the 2026 championship and bring the trophy back home.

The Callahan Cup is the BC High School Catholic Field Lacrosse Championship, bringing together Catholic secondary schools from across the province to compete for the title. Beyond the championship itself, the tournament is rooted in a larger purpose: to grow the game of lacrosse within Catholic schools throughout British Columbia and provide meaningful competitive opportunities for student-athletes.

After Vancouver College claimed the title last year, this season鈥檚 final carried added motivation. Facing the defending champions once again, 天美传媒 delivered a determined and disciplined performance to turn the tables and take the cup back.

The championship matchup featured two of the province鈥檚 premier programs, with intensity high from the opening faceoff. Both teams exchanged momentum throughout the contest, but 天美传媒 executed in key moments down the stretch, shutting the door defensively and capitalizing on offensive opportunities to secure the two-goal win.

The victory reflects the team鈥檚 commitment, preparation, and resilience throughout the season. Reclaiming the Callahan Cup from last year鈥檚 champions makes the accomplishment even more meaningful, as 天美传媒 once again stands at the top of Catholic high school lacrosse in British Columbia.

PM Mark Carney Spotted with Alumni

Two 天美传媒 alumni, former Burnaby City Councilor Mike Hillman and Richard Liu (Class of ’88) were enjoying coffee while watching the Team Canada Olympic finals at White Spot. At that moment, Prime Minister Mark Carney stopped by, giving them a chance to take a quick photo.

Despite the eventual overtime loss, this definitely made the day a little more memorable!

2nd Annual Pickleball Event

Darrell Hall: Lenten Mission & Book Launch

From Hays to the Heart: A Lenten Mission and a New Book Launch

Darrell Hall attended a three-day Lenten Mission in Hays, Kansas. He spoke about faith, science, purpose, suffering and the deeper questions that shape our lives during this sacred season.

In addition to this, Darrell Hall has also launched his new book, The 7 Essential Questions of Life. The eBook is currently available on Amazon.ca and the paperback edition will be released on March 4th.

Lucas Chen

Lucas Chen (grade 8) trains and competes in alpine skiing with the Cypress Ski Club and delivered a strong performance in Whistler at the BC Games Qualifier, earlier in January. As a result, he has been selected to compete in this year鈥檚 BC Games.

Lucas will be away from school from February 26 to March 1 while he participates in the Games. We congratulate him on this outstanding achievement and wish him the very best as he represents his club at this provincial event.

January has been a busy and exciting month at 天美传媒. While returning from Christmas break can sometimes take a little time, our community jumped right back into the rhythm of school life.

From an alumni perspective, 天美传媒 is always looking for meaningful ways to stay connected with our talented, creative, and engaged former Knights. Since the school鈥檚 inception in the 1960s, nearly 6,000 students have graduated from 天美传媒. One of the most important ways we maintain these connections is through the many alumni events we host throughout the year.

One of our most popular traditions is the Annual Alumni Basketball Tournament, and this January we proudly hosted the 27th edition of this much-loved event. Twelve teams competed this year, with four teams in our Knights (Competitive) Division and eight teams in the Edmund Rice (Recreational/Fun) Division. As always, the tournament welcomed energetic, athletic, and not-so-athletic alumni of all ages. A special shout-out goes to the Grad 2K team, who never fail to bring the laughs and remind us that this event is all about fun and community.

Looking ahead, we are excited to announce that on February 21, we will be hosting our 2nd Annual 天美传媒 Alumni & Friends Pickleball Tournament. This event is open to participants (including current and alumni parents) of all skill levels鈥攏o experience required. Finally, I am proud to share some exciting news from our Alumni Association. We extend our sincere gratitude to Class of 2007 graduate Ashley Grewal for her many years of dedicated service as Vice President. 2021 graduate Elizabeth Irving has stepped into her role as Vice President. Many in our community know Elizabeth as a gifted singer and performer, as well as the official Vancouver Canucks anthem singer among other things. Her passion for giving back to 天美传媒 makes her a wonderful addition to this role. Chris Boyd 鈥�00 continues as President, alongside Alice Roder (Secretary) and Joe Thierman 鈥�76 (Treasurer). Our Alumni Association would not be possible without the commitment and generosity of this group.

Preferential Option for the Poor Week

As we begin celebrating our third Catholic Social Teaching, the Preferential Option for the Poor, our community will take part in special activities connected to this teaching throughout January and February. This focus connects beautifully with the beginning of Lent on February 18, particularly through the Lenten practice of almsgiving.

Earlier this month, Brother Hugh O鈥橬eil shared with our staff his experiences with the Brothers and how he has witnessed this mission lived out firsthand during his time as Provincial Head. His reflections helped ground this teaching in real-world witness and service.

On Friday, January 30, our school Mass will be dedicated to the Preferential Option for the Poor, and our community will continue a special focus on this teaching throughout early February, inviting us to grow in compassion, generosity, and solidarity with those most in need.

School-Wide Confessions

As we begin our Lenten journey of prayer, reflection, and renewal, our school community will take part in School-Wide Lenten Confessions on Wednesday, March 4 and Thursday, March 5.

This is a meaningful opportunity for students to pause, reflect, and experience God鈥檚 mercy during the season of Lent.

Religion Class visit to Orthodox Church

On Monday, January 26, Mr. Rogalski鈥檚 Religion 11 class had the opportunity to visit our neighbour parish, St. Michael the Archangel Eastern Orthodox Church located on Canada Way. This visit was a valuable and enriching experience for our students as they learned more about the Eastern Orthodox tradition and its deep roots in Christian history.

During the visit, students explored both the similarities and differences between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, including shared beliefs, sacred traditions, and distinctive practices. The experience helped students better understand the richness of the wider Christian family while strengthening their appreciation for their own faith tradition.

We were warmly welcomed by the St. Michael the Archangel community, whose hospitality and openness made the visit especially meaningful. We are grateful for this opportunity to connect with our neighbours and look forward to continuing this relationship by bringing additional Religion classes to visit in the future.

Expo For Life Conference

We are excited to announce the upcoming Expo Conference for Life, taking place on March 6 at St. Nicholas Parish.

This dynamic conference will bring together students from schools across the Archdiocese for a day focused on Reverence for Life, faith, learning, and community. Members of the 天美传媒 Reverence for Life Team have been actively involved in helping to organize this event alongside students from other Archdiocesan schools鈥攐ffering leadership, collaboration, and a shared commitment to living out our faith in meaningful ways.

The Expo Conference for Life will be open to all students, and more details鈥攊ncluding the schedule, speakers, and registration information鈥攚ill be shared soon. Please note that spaces will be limited, so early interest is encouraged.

On Tuesday, March 10, Grade 10 students will take part in an off-campus Morality Retreat titled Walking the Path of Goodness, an important component of the Grade 10 Religion program. This retreat invites students to explore moral decision-making through a Catholic lens while engaging with the rich religious and cultural diversity of our local community.

天美传媒’s Jazz A hosted VC’s Jazz 11 for our annual Jazz Sharing Day on January 27. Students worked with renowned jazz musicians and educators and performed for one another.

The students always enjoy this event and the opportunity to collaborate with our fellow Christian Brother school.

Northwest High School Honour Band

Congratulations to Grade 11 band students Daniel Endriga (trumpet), Olivia Lee (flute), Eldon Yan (euphonium), and Kaden Yan (clarinet) who were selected to represent 天美传媒 at Pacific Lutheran University’s Northwest High School Honour Band! The band included students from BC, Washington, Oregon, and Montana.

Junior Band at Camp Stillwood

The Junior Band enjoyed a winter retreat at Camp Stillwood where we had the opportunity for extended rehearsal and social time as well as preparation for our upcoming performances.

Track and Field 2026

The 天美传媒 Track and Field Championship Season officially begins on Monday, March 2nd, and we鈥檙e inviting students from Grades 8鈥�12 to be part of an exciting and supportive team environment. Alumni & Friends Pickleball Tournament

Last year鈥檚 Community Pickleball Tournament was a smashing success, with a strong turnout from Knights young and old. We kicked off the day with a fun and engaging beginners鈥� workshop in the morning, giving first-timers a chance to learn the game and feel confident on the court. Competition heated up as we moved into the tournament, where alumni and friends rallied together for a day of friendly matches and community spirit.

We鈥檙e excited to build on that momentum this year! Whether you鈥檙e a seasoned player or just picking up a paddle for the first time, join us for another day of fun, connection, and Knight pride!

During our Advent Mass on Thursday, December 18, 2025, Father Meisl, the readings, and our Prayers of the Faithful, reminded all who gathered that Advent is not merely a season to observe, but a posture to adopt鈥攁 time of waiting marked by purpose, intention, and hope.

In a world urging us to rush toward Christmas, Advent calls us to slow our pace, embrace stillness, and prepare. Waiting is not passive; it is an active and faithful openness of heart that makes room for what God is preparing to reveal. Both, what we await and how we wait, truly matter.

This season invites us not only to quieter schedules, but also to quieter hearts. Amid the noise, expectations, and busyness鈥攅ven the good and joyful kinds鈥擜dvent gently reminds us of our need for silence. As Amy Grant reflects in her song I Need a Silent Night, sometimes our hearts simply long for a moment of stillness in which God can be heard. In that silence, we are given space to breathe, reflect, and listen more closely for God鈥檚 presence.

Throughout these weeks, the light of the Advent candles guides us. Each flame reminds us that light continues to grow, even when darkness remains. Hope often begins quietly, in simple acts of patience, kindness, and compassion. Each of us is called to carry that light beyond this sacred space and into our daily lives, especially to those who may feel weary, burdened, uncertain, or unseen.

The hope we celebrate during Advent is not fragile or fleeting. It is rooted in trust and born in humility. Christ entered the world not with grandeur or noise, but with gentleness and simplicity, reminding us that God so often comes quietly, in the ordinary and unexpected moments of our lives. This hope does not deny the challenges we face; rather, it transforms how we meet them.

Advent also invites us to prepare room within our hearts. True preparation is not found in schedules or decorations, but in reflection. It calls us to consider what we may need to set aside鈥攐ur distractions, impatience, or fears鈥攕o that we might create the interior space where Christ can dwell more fully within us.

Today, we give thanks for our community鈥攕tudents, staff, families, alumni, and their loved ones鈥攚ho journey together through this season of preparation. Advent is not meant to be lived alone. It is strengthened when we support one another, serve generously, and walk together in faith.

As we journey beyond the busyness of Christmas, may the spirit of Advent remain with us. May we carry its quiet hope into our classrooms, homes, workplaces, and relationships. Let us go forward as people of hope鈥攁ttentive, compassionate, and ready to welcome Christ, not only at Christmas, but in one another.

May God鈥檚 peace be with you all and may we all truly live Jesus in our hearts鈥� forever!

Catholic Social Teaching Focus

Our 天美传媒 community is currently wrapping up our second focus on Catholic Social Teaching, centered on the theme of Peace. Earlier this year, we began our journey by reflecting on and living out the CST of Care for Creation, engaging students through classroom learning, school liturgies, and a variety of community-based activities.

Earlier this month, we marked this focus by celebrating Peace Week, with each day highlighting ways to recognize, build, and celebrate peace within our school and wider community. One meaningful activity was the creation of a Peace Intention Tree, where students were invited to write and share their personal prayers and intentions for peace.

When we return, our school will turn its attention to the CST of Preferential Option for the Poor, inviting students and staff to deepen their awareness of those most in need and to respond with compassion, justice, and action.

This focus will continue to be woven intentionally into classroom learning, school liturgies, and community initiatives, as we strive to live out our call to faith in action.

天美传媒 Students Serve at the Annual Mass for Life

On Saturday, December 13, members of the 天美传媒 Reverence for Life team attended and served at the annual Mass for Life held at Holy Rosary Cathedral in downtown Vancouver.

The Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Richard Smith. Students assisted as greeters and support for the service and reception.

Following the Mass, students were invited to attend a reception. During this gathering, Isabella Comuzzi (Grade 11) was selected to share a student reflection on Reverence for all Life.

We are proud of our students for their leadership, service, and commitment to upholding the dignity of life in our community. This team is currently helping to organize a student Expo for Life that will take place on Friday March 6th at St Nicholas Parish in Langley. More details coming soon.

Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral Visit

On Wednesday, December 17, our Grade 9 Religion students took part in a special spiritual experience at Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in New Westminster as part of their ongoing exploration of faith, community, and the global Catholic Church. This parish also happens to be Mr. Adams parish.

The Cathedral graciously welcomed our students to participate in the Jubilee of Hope 鈥� a sacred time of renewal, grace, and encounter within the Church. Through this visit, students were introduced to the richness of the Eastern Catholic tradition, experiencing faith expressed through beauty, prayer, and hospitality.

The program included a guide through the Cathedral, sacred Byzantine music and the opportunity to participate in a Divine Liturgy. Following the service the students had a q and a with Fr. Mykhailo Ozorovych and a deeper understanding of the different churches of Catholicism. This meaningful experience helped students deepen their understanding of the diversity and unity of the Catholic Church while reflecting on how faith is lived and celebrated across cultures.

Holiday Hampers

天美传媒 Knights staff and students were pleased to support several local families with Holiday Hampers through the Lower Mainland Purpose Society. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve our community and look forward to continuing to support our neighbourhood through meaningful initiatives like this in the future.

Christmas Decorating

A day of Christmas-themed activities filled Advisory on December 17! From gingerbread house building and festive relays to musical chairs and decorating the hallways, our Knights brought the school to life with plenty of Christmas spirit.

Sleep-Out for Homelessness

On Sunday, Dec. 7th approximately 25 grade 11 and 12 students participated in our second annual Sleepout for Homelessness campaign.

These students stayed at the school from 7:00pm until 7:00am to make themselves more aware of issues surrounding homelessness. The night started with a moving talk from Brother O’Neill, connecting the Advent season with the importance of treating all people with dignity. We then enjoyed a community meal graciously made by Mr. Carl Polych. This was the last food the students would have for the rest of the night. Through the connection of Trudy Martin (2020), we had a presentation from NaloxHome, a group of volunteers from SFU that advocated for awareness of naloxone and reducing the stigma of drug overdose. This was a very impactful and informative session.

To include some service to the night the students then packed candy bags for the Good Shephard Ministry and attempted (some even succeeded) to make scarves that would be donated to a the same charity. The night concluded with the students, along with Mr. Adams and Mr. McCormick, attempting to sleep on the gym floor with only a sleeping bag, trying to imagine the lack of comfort some people face on a nightly basis. This was a powerful experience in raising awareness for those in our community dealing with homelessness.

Christmas Toy Drive

A heartfelt thank you to the 天美传媒 community for your incredible generosity and support of this year鈥檚 Annual Christmas Toy Drive. Once again, 天美传媒 families, students, and staff came together to bring joy to children and families in need throughout our local community.

A special thank you to 天美传媒 parents Dai Martin and Michelle Sales, along with alumnus parent Shannon Kaustinin, who began preparing pancakes before 6:00 a.m. to help create a warm and welcoming start to the morning. Members of the Blessed Edmund Rice Team (BERT) played a key role in organizing, promoting, and serving at the event, helping to collect hundreds of toys for both the Salvation Army and several local Burnaby elementary schools.

The morning was filled with festive spirit, highlighted by our 天美传媒 band playing Christmas music in the foyer, a special visit from Santa, and a joyful pancake breakfast for those who donated.

Following the Toy Drive, members of the BERT team delivered toys and hampers to Glenwood Elementary, 12th Avenue Elementary, Clinton Elementary, and Nelson Elementary, as well as to families throughout South Burnaby.

Thank you once again for your kindness, generosity, and commitment to serving others. Your support helped make this Christmas brighter for so many.

A heartfelt thank you to the 天美传媒 community for your generous support of our Clothing and Toiletries Drive, which took place in late October as part of our focus on Care for Creation.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of students, staff, and families, a large number of donations were collected and delivered to the Catholic Charities Men鈥檚 Shelter at St. Paul鈥檚 Hospital, where they will support individuals in need during the colder months.

This past week, the GM of the Men鈥檚 Shelter, Justin Milad, visited 天美传媒, met with students, and presented the school with a certificate of appreciation signed by Archbishop Richard Smith. The certificate reads:

Record-Breaking Candy Drive for the Good Shepherd Ministry

These bags have been, and will continue to be, distributed by members of our Senior BERT team as they walk the streets of the Downtown Eastside on Monday evenings, offering kindness, conversation, and support to those they encounter.

天美传媒 Meets Damien Memorial

Our Varsity Girls’ team took a trip down to Honolulu this winter break to soak up some sun and play some basketball. While they were there, they spent a day with fellow Christian Brother school, Damien Memorial School. They attended their advent liturgy, had lunch with students and staff, took part in some classes and then played a game against their varsity girls’ basketball team!

Highlights from the visit included taking part in Hawaiian language class and hula class with Dr. Pua Higa, their principal!

27th Annual Alumni Basketball Tournament

The 27th Annual 天美传媒 Alumni Basketball Tournament returns January 30鈥�31, 2026 at the StanJean Athletic Centre.

Join fellow alumni for a full weekend of hoops with divisions for a wide range of skill levels. Tip off the weekend with a Friday night social, then bring the whole family on Saturday for basketball action and kid-friendly activities!

Alumni & Friends Pickleball Tournament

Last year鈥檚 Community Pickleball Tournament was a smashing success, with a strong turnout from Knights young and old. We kicked off the day with a fun and engaging beginners鈥� workshop in the morning, giving first-timers a chance to learn the game and feel confident on the court. Competition heated up as we moved into the tournament, where alumni and friends rallied together for a day of friendly matches and community spirit.

We鈥檙e excited to build on that momentum this year! Whether you鈥檙e a seasoned player or just picking up a paddle for the first time, join us for another day of fun, connection, and Knight pride!

Textiles Club

Students have been enthusiastically continuing to build their skills in both loom knitting and sewing taking on increasingly creative and challenging projects. Our sewing members have completed beautifully crafted bookmarks and head warmers. Loom knitters have been equally busy producing a wide range of cozy toques in various sizes.

A hallmark of our club continues to be the spirit of generosity displayed by our students. All of the toques and head warmers they create are donated to support community needs. This Christmas, these items will be shared with the Good Shepherd Ministry. We are deeply proud of the kindness and care our students put into their work.

We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the generous donors who gifted our club with two sewing machines. This contribution that has significantly expanded what students are able to make and learn. Additionally, we warmly thank all of the parents and families who donated yarn this year; your support keeps our knitting projects thriving.

Blessed Edmund Rice Peace Week

This month, our 天美传媒 community will be focusing on the Catholic Social Teaching of Peace, one of the core values that shaped the life and mission of Blessed Edmund Rice. As we enter this special week, we are invited to reflect on how we can become instruments of peace鈥攊n our school, our homes, and our wider community.

Throughout the week, students and staff will participate in a variety of simple but meaningful activities designed to help us practice peace daily. These include our Peace Intention Tree in the front foyer, school-wide reconciliation at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, student rosary in the chapel, a fun and encouraging Peace/Kindness Bingo challenge, and Friday’s Peace Stations, where students create cards for prison ministry, Good Shepherd Ministry, and other community outreach programs.

We encourage all students to take part and to look for small opportunities each day to show compassion, kindness, and forgiveness. Together, may we continue to build a community where the spirit of peace鈥攔ooted in Christ and inspired by Blessed Edmund Rice鈥攃an flourish.

As we continue our Advent journey, 天美传媒 will be holding school-wide confessions at Our Lady of Mercy Parish on:

Grade 12s will attend confession during their religion block over the two days

This is a wonderful opportunity for students to prepare their hearts for Christmas through reflection, prayer, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Sleep-Out for Homelessness

The ACTION Team will be organizing our second Sleep-out for Homelessness campaign on December 7 from 7pm to 7am. This event is open to all grade 11 and 12 students. The evening will have some educational aspects as well as some activities that will support local charities that help those experiencing homelessness. Registration is on the CLE Google Classroom.

As we enter this season of giving, we invite our entire 天美传媒 community to come together in support of our Annual Christmas Toy Drive on Tuesday, December 16th. This special tradition was started years ago by 天美传媒 alumnus Miguel Ramos, who, while only in Grade 10, felt called to make a meaningful difference for children in our local community. His initiative continues today as one of our most impactful acts of service.

On the morning of December 16th, we ask each member of our 天美传媒 family to consider donating a new, unwrapped toy. In appreciation, students who donate will receive a pancake breakfast and contribute valuable House Team points鈥攁ll while helping spread Christmas joy to children who need it most. This will be a festive morning with the band playing in the foyer, fun activities, games, pictures with Santa and a Christmas movie in the Cafeteria.

All donated toys will support the Salvation Army and also delivered by 天美传媒 students to local families in need in Burnaby. Your generosity will directly brighten the Christmas season for many children across our community.

Band-a-Palooza

Band-a-Palooza took place on October 17. We welcomed guest teachers on all of our instruments and enjoyed an听evening full of music and fun.

Christmas Music Knight

Christmas Music Knight was held on November 28, followed by Elementary Music Morning on November 29. Congratulations to all of our student musicians on beautiful performances! Thanks to our Music Parents Committee for their hard work in supporting the event.

Swim Team Season End

The swim team wrapped up its season this November. The team consisted of 27 students who practiced weekly at Edmonds pool. The team was able to attend a friendly meet in North Vancouver and participated in the Fraser North Zone Meet in late October.

Hayley Tang was chosen as our Swim Team All Star at Zones as she was able to earn 26 points toward our team total. The season ended with a house-games tournament at our last practice. The students learned new swimming skills and were supported by our student-athlete coaches: Tia Butzelaar, Hayley Tang, and Desiree Wai.

A special shout out to Tia and her sister, Ava, who became student coaches for the team when they were in grade 9. Tia will be graduating this year and we wish her all the best! Thank you so much to the team, managers and student coaches!

Cross Country Provincial

This year, Cross Country Provincials were held in Nanoose Bay on November 1. As a result of their consistent effort during the season, our Junior Boys, Senior Girls and Senior Boys all qualified to compete at the Provincial level as 鈥渢eams鈥�. In addition, two Junior Girls qualified as independent athletes. (The Junior Girls鈥� team just missed qualifying as a team).

As coaches, we were so proud of each athlete as they faced mud, torrential rain and hundreds of competitors. All 22 athletes ran with determination, perseverance and grit. A special mention goes to Ava Butzelaar who placed 18th and ran her 5km in 21:16!

A huge thank you to all the parents who travelled to Nanaimo to cheer and support the team.

This caps a dominant season as league, zone, and BC Catholics championships for this squad.

Jake Rogalski: Meeting Lech Wa艂臋sa

On October 30, 2025, I attended an evening with Lech Wa艂臋sa in Vancouver. For many, he is a famous name from history. For me, he represents courage, faith, and peace. I am the child of Polish immigrants who escaped communist Poland in the late 1960s, first to Sweden (where I was born) and then to Canada in 1973. My parents carried stories of fear and hope. They taught me that freedom is never guaranteed鈥攊t has to be protected and valued.

Listening to Wa艂臋sa speak felt like hearing my parents鈥� stories come to life. He talked about the Solidarity movement, how in 1980 shipyard workers in Gda艅sk stood up for fair wages and respect. What started as a strike became a peaceful movement that changed Poland and inspired freedom across Eastern Europe.

Wa艂臋sa鈥檚 accomplishments are well known: he founded Solidarity, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983, and became Poland鈥檚 first democratically elected president in 1990. But what stood out that night wasn鈥檛 his success鈥� it was his humility. He gave credit to Pope John Paul II, saying, 鈥淭he Pope organized us for prayer, not for the fight, but prayer became the force that united a nation.鈥�

For Wa艂臋sa, faith wasn鈥檛 just about religion. It was his strength and a way to act for peace. He said that 鈥淕od never created borders, people did,鈥� and he truly believes we are all one family. He joked that his main goal was never to become president but simply 鈥渢o get the Polish people to the station called Freedom.鈥� After that, he said with a smile, 鈥淚 hoped others, smarter than me, would take the train and continue the journey.鈥� His humor showed that freedom, once achieved, needs to be carried forward by others.

He also warned that today鈥檚 world faces new problems鈥攏ew divisions, misinformation, and a loss of trust. 鈥淧eople no longer believe in democracy because it no longer defends the people,鈥� he said. His message was simple: we need to rediscover solidarity, not as a slogan but as a way to live鈥攚ith honesty, compassion, and respect for one another.

After his talk, I waited in line to have my copy of Lech Wa艂臋sa and Solidarity 1980鈥�1990 signed. When I sat down, he noticed the Solidarno艣膰 pin on my jacket鈥攁 small white button with the red Solidarity logo from the 1980s. Wa艂臋sa, wearing a white shirt with the same emblem on one pocket and an image of Our Lady of Cz臋stochowa on the other, smiled warmly. He reached out his hand in a friendly gesture of solidarity.

In Polish, I told him, 鈥淒zi臋kuj臋 Panu za wszystko, co Pan zrobi艂 dla ludzko艣ci i dla Polak贸w鈥� 鈥� 鈥淭hank you for all you have done for humanity and for the Polish people.鈥� He smiled widely for the camera, and the photo captured that moment perfectly. For me, it wasn鈥檛 about meeting a famous person (I鈥檝e met many). It was about thanking someone whose faith and courage helped shape the freedom my family now enjoys.

As a teacher at St. Thomas More, where I have the privilege of teaching both Social Studies and Religion, this experience moved me deeply. It reminded me why we study history鈥攏ot just to learn dates and names, but to understand the power of faith, justice, and human dignity in shaping our world. Wa艂臋sa鈥檚 story bridges both subjects: it shows how belief can inspire peaceful change and how ordinary people can make extraordinary differences when guided by conscience. His words renewed my hope that education can help young people see freedom not as something distant, but as something they help build every day through kindness, truth, and courage.

As I left the hall, I felt a quiet sense of peace. Wa艂臋sa鈥檚 life reminds us that real freedom and peace come from courage, faith, and perseverance鈥攏ot from power or politics. His story is about more than Poland. It鈥檚 about the human spirit鈥檚 ability to stand for what鈥檚 right and to keep moving forward, even in hard times.

Looking at the photo later, I felt grateful not just for that brief meeting, but for what it represented. The spirit of Solidarno艣膰 still lives on: in faith, in truth, and in the simple belief that peace begins when we choose to stand together.

Ms. MacLellan has been named a Yamaha Canada True North Master Educator, joining a roster of highly regarded music educators from across Canada. Through this program, teachers and students can receive mentorship, advice, and guidance in support of their music programs.

Model Her Way

On October 22, we had the opportunity to host our 2nd Annual Model Her Way: Women in Leadership event which highlights the amazing women we have in our 天美传媒 Community. Our keynote speaker was 鈥�04 Grad Katie McCallum.

With the help of our two grade 12 moderators Ariana Ogilvie and Hana Miles we were able to dive into Katie鈥檚 journey from a young girl to her current role as Director of Advancement and Community Relations at Southridge School.

We look forward to next year鈥檚 Model Her Way Women in Leadership event, as we continue to celebrate and learn from the inspirational leaders we have in our 天美传媒 community. Thanksgiving Mass

On Thursday, October 10, our 天美传媒 community gathered to celebrate Thanksgiving Mass. This special Mass reminds us to pause and reflect on the many blessings in our lives 鈥� our families, friends, faith, and the opportunities we are given each day. Rooted in gratitude, this Thanksgiving Mass calls us to recognize God鈥檚 presence in all things and to share our blessings with others, especially those in need. Together, we gave thanks for the gifts of creation, the people who enrich our lives, and the spirit of generosity that continues to strengthen our school family.

Good Shepherd Ministry

Our Good Shepherd walks began again this month, marking a journey of faith and service. Students and staff travel to the Downtown Eastside, near Gore and Cordova, to St. Paul鈥檚 Church鈥攚e hand out items like candy, socks, and in the colder months, toques and gloves, but also hearts ready to listen and love.

As we walk the streets, we encounter many individuals鈥攅ach with their own story, their own burdens, and their own dignity. We offer simple gifts, each one carefully prepared with a prayer tucked inside. Often, it鈥檚 the prayer that touches hearts first, reminding them鈥攁nd us鈥攖hat they are seen, loved, and not forgotten.

Before and after each walk, we gather in prayer, lifting up the names and faces we鈥檝e met and asking God to pour His mercy, protection, and peace upon all who live on the streets. These walks are more than acts of service鈥攖hey are moments of encounter, where Christ meets us in the most unexpected places.

Last Monday, we were blessed with the opportunity to volunteer on the DTES with the Good Shepherd Ministry. Serving with the Good Shepherd Ministry is an experience that will move you in a different way each time you walk. Although it made us nervous at first, meeting the unhoused and having small conversations when we offered candy bags or socks was so grounding, only then do you truly realize how much you have to be grateful for. Since our first walk last year, we’ve met so many people with fascinating stories and are looking forward to encountering many more.

Candy Drive

Beginning on November 3 and running until November 14, 天美传媒 will be running a Candy Drive in support of the Good Shepherd Ministry, which serves those in need in Vancouver鈥檚 Downtown Eastside.

Each Monday, 天美传媒 students volunteer with this ministry鈥攈anding out socks, gloves, and offering prayers to those they meet. As part of this outreach, students also prepare small bags of candy decorated with positive and prayerful messages.

This simple symbol of compassion鈥攁 small bag of candy shared with food and encouragement鈥攐ffers a moment of human dignity and reminds the 鈥渕ost neglected members of our community鈥� that they are loved and not forgotten.

Senior Art Studio Field Trip

Senior Art Students travelled to the Vancouver Art Gallery for a tour of the exhibit “Monsters in my Head” by Japanese Artist Otani Workshop exploring sculpture based on myths, memories and materials. Students then had an interactive program and tour about “Interconnections” at the Bill Reid Art gallery to explore complex conversations around Indigenous art, cultural appropriation, repatriation, and reconciliation; learn about the role of oral traditions and start to think about how we can move forward as a country in partnership with First Nations.

Casting Call for 天美传媒 Drama Production

2025/26 天美传媒 Drama Production presents you with The Play That Goes Wrong by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields! The story is a slapstick comedy that follows a topsy turvy theatre troupe dealing with a murder mystery, where the ill-fated, drama-loving goons encounter numerous mishaps.

If you would like to read the play The Play That Goes Wrong: High School Edition ahead of time to prepare for the audition, please .

Auditions will take place in the Drama Room (223) on the following dates at LUNCH: November 13th and 14th. There is no need to memorize lines for the audition. You will be given scenes from the play during the audition to act on the spot. No prior theatre performance or experience is required to audition!

Once casted, you will have to commit to after school rehearsal sessions (3 days a week approx., 1.5 – 2 hours per session till Winter Break). Future rehearsal sessions in 2026 will be communicated in December.

The audition results will be announced with Google Classroom and Remind App invites via email by November 19, Wednesday.

天美传媒 has a SUN RUN team! Race Day 鈥� Sunday, April 19, 2026.

We are excited to announce that 天美传媒 will have a Sun Run team again this year. Come out and participate with your friends and family. There is a 2.5km or the 10km course.

Before registering, please note the following:

1. 天美传媒 is NOT responsible for student supervision or transportation during the Sun Run
2. 天美传媒 may offer some training resources, such as a suggested plan to prepare for running 10km and may offer some scheduled practice runs. However, please note that runners are responsible for their own training.
3. If we have less than 14 members on our team, the team will be disbanded and the members will be automatically moved into the Individual categories and you will be responsible for paying the upgrade fees
4. Youth team technical shirts will have 天美传媒 Knights printed on the back; however, the Cotton shirts will NOT have a team name on the back due to a limited area of print size
5. Parents and siblings are welcome to register as part of the Sun Run team, however, the number of youths must be greater than the number of adults on the team.

Looking into the Mirror

For the vast majority of my 36-year high school teaching career, I have intentionally taught the 鈥渂ookends.鈥� As a Social Studies and English teacher, I looked forward each year to teaching both the incoming Grade 8s and the outgoing Grade 12s. When I transitioned into a more full-time administrative role nearly 25 years ago, I continued (with the exception of the past three years) to assign myself at least one teaching block鈥攐scillating year to year between a block of Social Studies 8 and a block of Geography 12.

While I have taught the full gamut of courses in both subject areas over the years, it is safe to say these are my two favourite classes to teach. Grade 8s enter high school wide-eyed and full of life鈥攔eady to embark on a new adventure and game for anything. You ask a question, and (literally) all 30 hands fly into the air. It does not hurt that the curriculum for Social Studies 8 is packed full of juicy content, and that they genuinely enjoy the material. However, what I love most about teaching the 8s is their willingness to take risks. Their approach is more often than not 鈥淩eady 鈥� Fire 鈥� Aim,鈥� yet they are undeterred if their answers are even slightly off the mark. They have the confidence and gusto to forge ahead anyway.

Living Jesus in Our Hearts:

A Two-Year Journey in Catholic Social Justice Teachings

This school year marks the beginning of a new two-year journey at 天美传媒 as we focus on Catholic Social Justice Teachings. Over the next two years, our community will explore how to live out our faith in practical and meaningful ways, guided by the values of the Church and inspired by the example of Jesus.

Our theme for the first year, 鈥淟ive Jesus in Our Hearts,鈥� calls us to make faith visible in our daily lives鈥攖hrough prayer, reflection, service, and action. Each two-month period will focus on a different principle of Catholic Social Teaching, helping staff and students deepen their understanding and put these values into practice. Across the two years, all ten Catholic Social Justice Teachings will be incorporated through liturgies, classroom activities, service opportunities, and community initiatives.

We began in September with the theme of Stewardship of Creation, tying in with Laudato Si鈥�, Pope Francis鈥� call to care for our common home. At our staff Faith Formation Day, we reflected on what it means to be stewards of God鈥檚 creation and considered ways we can respond together as a school. Students have been involved through eco-pledges, recycling initiatives, and a variety activities and services.

Looking ahead, our November鈥揇ecember focus will be on Peace. This theme will be incorporated into school liturgies, Advent reflections, and student-led activities such as a peace mural, a 鈥淩andom Acts of Peace鈥� challenge, and an Advent mass. Just as Jesus is the Prince of Peace, we are called to bring peace into our classrooms, homes, and community.

Through this two-year plan, we hope to weave Catholic Social Justice into the fabric of 天美传媒 life鈥攑rayer, classroom learning, service, and community engagement. Together, as a school, we will continue to ask how we can live Jesus in our hearts and witness His love in action.

Gr.8 Retreat: Building Belonging in the Spirit of Edmund Rice

On September 23 and 25, our newest Knights in Gr. 8 experienced their first retreat as members of the 天美传媒 community. Held at the Burnaby Hall, the retreat was a joyful and meaningful introduction to life at 天美传媒, rooted in the theme of Belonging and the Charism of Blessed Edmund Rice.

The retreat was led by a dedicated team of Gr. 11 and 12 student leaders, who guided the Gr. 8s through a full day of activities, small group sessions, and team-building games. These opportunities helped our students get to know each other, build friendships, and learn from the wisdom and experiences of their senior peers.

Highlights of the retreat included fun icebreakers, reflective sessions on what it means to belong to the 天美传媒 community, and an introduction to advocacy in action鈥攅ncouraging our Gr. 8s to recognize their responsibility to live their faith through service and justice.

Each retreat day concluded with a grade-level Mass at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, celebrated by Fr. Hien Nguyen.

The Gr. 8 Retreat is an important milestone, setting the tone for the high school journey ahead. Through prayer, community, and the example of Edmund Rice, our Grade 8 Knights were welcomed into a tradition of faith, service, and belonging that will carry them throughout their time at 天美传媒.

Grade 12 Retreat: A Time for Reflection, Faith and Friendship

From October 6-8, our Gr. 12 Knights will embark on their final retreat at Camp Stillwood at beautiful Cultus Lake. This special retreat offers our senior students a unique opportunity to step away from the daily routine and spend two nights focused on faith, reflection, and community.

The retreat will provide a space for students to bond as a grade level, share their experiences, and engage in meaningful discussions about important faith and life issues. Through small group sessions, activities, and reflective moments, students will have the chance to consider their personal journey, their relationships, and the path ahead as they prepare for life beyond 天美传媒.

The Gr. 12 Retreat is a meaningful capstone to their high school experience, fostering connection, growth, and a deeper understanding of living their faith in action. It promises to be a memorable experience, strengthening friendships and leaving students inspired as they approach the final months of their time at 天美传媒.

LRC Work Experience Opportunities

Students from the LRC are looking for work experience opportunities within the community. A staff member will be with them the whole time. If anyone has a company or knows of opportunities for us to explore, please reach out to 天美传媒.

Truth and Reconciliation Service 2025

On Monday September 29, 天美传媒 had their annual Truth and Reconciliation service. The main purpose of our service was to draw attention to Indigenous voices and to connect those voices to the First Peoples Principles of Learning and our current school emphasis on the Catholic Social Teaching principle of Stewardship for Creation. We recognized Indigenous Peoples as the stewards of this land since time immemorial, and discussed how residential schools impacted their connection to their culture, their language and the land.

We emphasized two Indigenous teachings:

Sacred Responsibility for All Creation

We connected these teachings to three First Peoples Principles of Learning:
Learning involves recognizing the consequences of one鈥榮 actions.
Learning recognizes the role of Indigenous knowledge.
Learning ultimately supports the well-being of the self, the family, the community, the land, the spirits, and the ancestors.

The service was a respectful and reverent recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. All students received an orange ribbon and there were many orange shirts present in the student body.

Our Grade 8 and Elementary Band students participated in First Note Night on September 22. We welcomed guest teachers from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra who helped students get started on their new instruments.

On September 23, the Equinox Chorale had a fantastic day of workshops and team building highlighted by clinics from Geordie Roberts and Emily Cheung, pizza dinner, and a spirited game of Scattergories won by the alto section!

Homecoming ’25

On September 6, we proudly hosted听Homecoming 鈥�25, presented by AllWest Electric. It was fantastic to welcome back our alumni, families, and friends in support of both our Varsity Football and Senior Girls Volleyball teams.

The Senior Girls Volleyball team battled hard against Notre Dame at the StanJean Centre, falling just short in a close match. Meanwhile, our Varsity Boys Football team delivered a thrilling overtime victory against the Jugglers at Power Field鈥攁n instant classic!

A special highlight of the evening was honouring our milestone reunion classes of 1965, 1995, 2000, and 2005 during halftime. Seeing so many Knights come together to celebrate was truly memorable.

天美传媒 Alumni & Friends Ultimate Tournament

On September 27, we proudly hosted our Annual Alumni & Friends Ultimate Tournament at Power Field. Despite the rainy weather, more than 60 participants came out to play across five competitive teams, with alumni spanning graduating years from 2010 to 2030. The grads of 2011鈥�2013 celebrated their first-ever tournament victory, marking an exciting highlight of the day.

Beyond the competition, the event raised over $1,000 in support of the Ferdie Carrion Memorial Bursary. A heartfelt thank-you goes out to Mr. Joe Muise for his effort in organizing this event year after year.

Faith Lecture Series: Darrell Hall

We are excited to continue our Faith Lecture Series that delves deep into thought-provoking questions at the crossroads of faith, science, the Church, and society. Our first distinguished speaker for 2025 is Mr. Darrell Hall, who will deliver a lecture entitled, “Love That Breaks Chains: The Courage to Forgive”.

About the Lecture

We live in a world quick to judge, quick to cancel, and slow to forgive. But Jesus calls us to something harder and far greater. Forgiveness isn鈥檛 weakness. It鈥檚 the mark of the strong and the brave, the ones willing to love even when it hurts. What if the greatest strength we could ever show is not power or success, but the courage to love and forgive? What if real freedom begins when we release anger and resentment and choose love instead?

Jesus shows us that love and forgiveness cannot be separated; they are the way of the cross, and the path to becoming our true, best selves, people of love, courage, and the willingness to suffer. Love and forgiveness are the way of Jesus, the way of the cross, the way to freedom, healing, and lasting peace. This is not the easy road. It鈥檚 the courageous one. But it鈥檚 the only road that leads to abundant life.

Farewell to the Graduating Class of 2025

My heartfelt desire is that each of our young graduates leaving us is equipped to听Think Differently,听Act Boldly,听and Inspire Greatly. In speaking of a vision, I focus heavily on hopes 鈥� both present hopes and future hopes.

Over most of last month, and likely for much of the next two, there has (and will be) opportunities for you to be fully feted and celebrated by family and friends. There has likely already been (and will be) chances for introspection and self-reflection on the culmination of your life鈥檚 journey to this point. No doubt鈥� you have likely also had (and will have) the opportunity to think about and share with others your future plans. No matter how much you likely cringe when person after person asks you听鈥淪o, what are your plans?鈥�

Rather than die a silent death inside each time听yet another听person puts you on the spot and asks you that very same question鈥� I challenge ALL of you to embrace it! Think about it, is there any more exciting place to be?

Up to this point, much of your life has been regimented and planned out for you by others; those that love you most; your family; your teachers; your coaches; and to a certain degree, even your friends and peers.

ALL of that changes today.

Month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

June is traditionally observed in the Catholic Church as the Month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus鈥攁 time to reflect on Christ鈥檚 profound love and compassion, symbolized by his heart. The Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, celebrated on June 27th in 2025, falls on the Friday after the second Sunday following Pentecost. Throughout the month, we are encouraged to engage in devotions such as praying the Litany of the Sacred Heart, meditating on Gospel passages from Luke, and deepening their relationship with Jesus. It is also a time to offer acts of reparation for sins committed against his Sacred Heart.

As part of the school theme “Live Jesus in our Hearts”, the Sacred Heart of Jesus is featured as part of our poster series on the second floor hallways. The Sacred Heart consists of the heart, wound, crown of thorns, flame, and cross, each with it’s own symbolic meaning. Each poster helps to show and explain each of these symbols.

Good Shepherd Walk

On June 9, students and staff participated in the annual Good Shepherd Walk through Vancouver鈥檚 Downtown Eastside. The walk was a powerful opportunity to step into the community, connect with those experiencing hardship, and offer small acts of kindness.

Participants handed out essential items and snacks, sharing compassion, dignity, and hope with every interaction. The experience fostered a deeper understanding of social issues and encouraged students to embody empathy and service. Through this act of outreach, our community lived out the values of the Good Shepherd鈥攂ringing care and presence to those often overlooked.

Vancouver Model UN

In 1999, while serving as the Secretary-General to the United Nations, Ghanaian diplomat Kofi Annan stated, “More than ever before in human history, we share a common destiny. We can master it only if we face it together. And that, my friends, is why we have the United Nations.”

This year, the Model UN club has reflected on current events, and, in embracing Kofi Annan’s words, they have actively considered their own roles, as well as the role of the UN in facing the future. Club sessions aimed to mirror the workings of the UN committees; including formal debates, lobbying, and resolution papers on topics such as, refugee housing and nuclear policies.

Additionally, 20 students from the group had the privilege of participating in the Vancouver Model UN Conference; one of the largest of it’s kind in the world. From UNICEF and WHO, to the European Parliament, and our own ‘mock’ House of Commons, it was a pleasure to observe students participate in the democratic process of world politics. Special mention goes to Aidan Madamba, who was awarded the gavel for his powers of persuasion in the European Parliament, and to Declan Williams, who stood alone in the House of Commons against a mock US invasion.

I want to thank the leaders or “Dais” of the club for their hard work and unwavering commitment to finding diplomatic solutions to world issues. If you continue to work together, the future is truly promising.

On June 9, 天美传媒 held its annual Night of Knights awards ceremony, a celebration that honoured the hard work, dedication, and spirit of 天美传媒鈥檚 outstanding students. These award recipients had been nominated and voted for by both their peers and staff, reflecting the true values of what it means to be a Knight. A heartfelt thank-you was extended to the many individuals who made the event possible, especially the Media Arts students, the Parents Association, and Mr. Borthistle for his dedication and organization.

Telescopes Coming Soon!

For the first time in quite a while, the telescopes will be out at STM! Plans are coming together for an observing night in early July, depending on weather. This will be welcome to all members of the STM community (students, parents, alumni, etc.). Jazz Knight was held on May 26 at Rick Bronson鈥檚 House of Comedy, where our jazz students delivered a fantastic show. Earlier that week, Jazz A also performed at the VSO Day of Music at Christ Church Cathedral鈥攁n exciting opportunity to be part of a city-wide celebration of local musicians.

Our Senior Band, Senior Choir, and Chamber Choir gave a stunning performance at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, joined by over 50 alumni as part of the Alumni Band and Choir. The concert was a powerful moment of music and community.

California Music Trip
Senior Band and Choir students traveled to California for a memorable trip that included visits to Disneyland, Universal Studios, and Christ Cathedral. Highlights included participating in Disney Imagination Campus and working with professional composers and clinicians.

Junior Music Knight & Mentorship
Our Grade 8, Junior, and Elementary Ensembles presented Junior Music Knight this spring. We are especially proud of our students who served as mentors for our Elementary Band this year. We also bid farewell to our student teacher, Ms. Goetz, who will be the band director at Archbishop Carney next year.

School Outreach & Performances
Our Grade 8 Band recently performed at Our Lady of Mercy Elementary School. We loved seeing all of our Elementary Band friends and sharing the great things that the 天美传媒 Music program has to offer. Our Senior Band also visited OLM primary grades to talk about instruments and even help the students try them out!

Music Showcase
Our Music Department Showcase featured many of our talented students. Showcase raised money for our Music Council with partial proceeds donated to the Coalition for Music Education in Canada.

Music Banquet
Our Music Department Banquet celebrated our hard-working music students and a successful year. Congratulations to all!

Summer Opportunity
Ms. MacLellan will be leading a 1-day band camp鈥攖he VSO Summer Band Extravaganza鈥攐n July 11 at the VSO School of Music. Registration is now open at vsoschoolofmusic.ca.

Jazz Festival Highlight
A major highlight: Jazz A was one of only 10 BC high school jazz bands invited to perform at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

They gave an outstanding performance on June 21 at Robson Square鈥檚 Sounds of Youth Stage.

天美传媒 Chamber Singers & Grade 8 Concert Choir won the provincial arts festival for the grade 12 and under category and grade 8 and under category and will move on and represent at the Canada West Festival happening in August.

Congratulations to our 天美传媒 Knights Track & Field Team on an outstanding performance at the BC High School Championships in Langley this past June!
Our Grade 8 athletes stood out as one of the top teams in the province. A special highlight goes to Jada Waite, who had a phenomenal meet鈥攚inning the 100m, setting a new BC High School Provincial Record, placing 2nd in the 200m, and anchoring the gold medal 4x100m relay team alongside Allison Lee, Betty Golding, and Dunoti Olabode.

• Narayan Dhir also had a strong showing, earning silver in the pentathlon, bronze in javelin, and finishing 4th in the 200m finals.
• Evan Woo captured bronze in shot put
• Betty Golding earned bronze in the 200m hurdles.
• Liam Golding placed 4th in the 200m finals
• Nikola Rogalski finished 7th in long jump
• Jonah Johal placed 5th in shot put.

In the junior girls division, Lola Beliveau, Evelyn Ashford Livingston, Wincy Lee, and Nikola Rogalski set a new 4x100m record in the heats and placed 4th in the finals.

Several of our athletes will continue to compete with their clubs throughout the summer鈥攚e wish them the best of luck! Go Knights!

天美传媒 Summer Sports Camps

We are excited to share that we are offering a series of sports camps hosted here at 天美传媒 this summer. These camps are open to 天美传媒 families as well as students from our local communities. The camps are designed for elementary-aged students and will be led by experienced coaches, student-athletes, and staff. It’s a great opportunity for younger students to get to know 天美传媒 student-athletes, to learn new skills, and stay active during the summer break. We invite you all to share this information with family, friends and community members!

天美传媒 Summer Basketball Camp
The 天美传媒 Summer Basketball Camp is a 5-day camp designed to introduce players to the fundamentals of basketball in a fun and competitive atmosphere. It is open to boys and girls entering grades 3-8.

When: August 11th to 15th 2025
Time: 9:00am-12:00pm

天美传媒 Girls Volleyball Camp
The 天美传媒 Girls鈥� Volleyball Camp is a 5-day camp designed to introduce girls to the sport of volleyball. It is open to girls entering Grades 5-8 and will be coached by Mrs. Dawn Borthistle.

Time:听1-4 pm

天美传媒 Girls Basketball Camp
Little Knights will focus on the FUNdamentals of basketball through skill-building games, movement drills, and team challenges. We emphasize coordination, teamwork, and a love of the game鈥攚hile making sure every camper leaves with a big smile. Open to girls 6-9 years old.

Junior Knights will build on foundational skills with more advanced drills, gameplay strategies, and scrimmages. Expect a mix of high-energy drills, shooting and ball-handling practice, and leadership development led by experienced coaches and high school athletes. For girls 10-13 years old

Darrell Hall is pleased to share that he has been accepted as a speaker with two outstanding organizations that connect speakers with audiences across North America.

He is now officially listed with the , a respected platform that features diverse voices from across the country. Darrell is honoured to be included among such a dynamic group of speakers.

In addition, he has been invited to join the , based in Austin, Texas. This organization does meaningful work connecting Catholic speakers with parishes, schools, and events across the U.S. and beyond. Darrell is grateful to be part of their growing network.

Guest Speaker Cam Adair

On September 17, Cam Adair will speak to the grades 10-12 Career Life Education class and then later that day at the Meet the Teacher evening. Cam Adair is the founder of Game Quitters, the world’s largest support community for video game addiction, serving members in 95 countries. He speaks regularly around the world at high schools, universities, parent education nights, and addiction conferences. Cam combines deep and meaningful personal insights with lessons on addiction recovery, leadership, social entrepreneurship, and psychology.
