The game that I thought would be filled with cheering fans was rather drowned out by the sound of my own heart beating.

All I could feel was my legs shaking and adrenaline in overdrive as my feet hit the floor running. It was my last year of minor lacrosse, and a shot to play in provincials was on the line. All the injuries, practices, tears, friendships, and legacy of this team all came down to one game.

Three periods. 60 minutes.

As captain of this team, the stakes and pressure were high because leadership meant so much more than the letter sewn onto my jersey. Even though lacrosse is a team sport, I felt like the world was on my shoulders.

As the referee dropped the ball for the face-off, we ran out of the gates flying. After two periods of play, we were down by a goal. But there was still one period left – these next 20 minutes were what we had all practised for.

In the next 20 minutes, I ran harder than I have ever run in my life, double-shifting after double-shifting and truly leaving it all on the floor. But play after play, we couldn’t get a break.

Penalties made me question the referee’s eyesight. We were hitting post after post, and shots just couldn’t find the back of the net. Then the final whistle blew, and we were bested by a team that everyone in the area knew we should have beaten. We had outplayed them the entire game, yet none of it mattered. Our season was over, and for many others, so was their minor lacrosse career. The dressing room emotions were at an all-time high. I felt like all the hard work I had put in over the years was for nothing.

What do you do when you’re supposed to be the front of the line and you’ve let your team down?

What do you do when your best isn’t good enough?

I’d felt that feeling before. The loss itself was heartbreaking, but the weight underneath it: the feeling that I didn’t belong or wasn’t worthy of my role and the expectations placed upon me, I’d felt that all throughout my sports career.

Growing up as a young woman in sports and having played sports my entire life meant that very few of my coaches were women, but the women who did coach me showed me what it truly meant to play like a girl. It takes pure grit and strength to succeed in all sports and I see it so clearly in the physical sport of lacrosse.

Being the eldest daughter means that you are always expected to be perfect. Get the perfect report card and score the game-winning goals. But as I’ve watched my younger brothers grow up, I had to accept that they will be faster and stronger than I am even though I have played the sport longer than they’ve been alive. And it’s not because “I run like a girl.” It’s just basic biology.

Never the fastest, never the strongest, and never the standout player. So how do you measure personal success and growth when your achievements seem marginal compared to your family and your peers?

Rather than comparing myself to others, I learned to accept that and sports became about playing my game and showing up. Because at the end of the day, you’ll never feel a sense of personal pride if your only source of gratification is always being unrivaled.

As a female athlete, I have experienced firsthand how players who used to love playing slowly fall out of love with the sport. Girls, sometimes, have to deal with hand-me-down gear and uniforms that were designed to fit the body of a boy. One in three teenage girls stops playing sports, compared to one in ten boys, and by age 17, 50% of girls have quit playing sports altogether. After playing organised sports for most of my life, I understood it. It’s the limited support systems, resources for equipment, limited teams, and minimal opportunities; it made sense. This can lead to decreased self-confidence and the feeling that this sport wasn’t made for you.

So why keep playing?

Sports, to me, are so much more than medals hanging on the wall. It’s carpool karaoke on the way to a game, late-night practices when everyone would rather be sleeping, and the unforgettable pre-game energy as you’re leaving the dressing room to play in a provincial game.

For me, the end goal was never a signed contract. It originated as an outlet for exercise and an orange slice at halftime. Now, it was about the relationships I’ve gained and my growing love of the game.

This is why I coach. I wanted to give back to my community and to hopefully inspire other young females to continue to play sports. Coaching allows me to mentor other young girls by being that example of an older girl who is supporting and uplifting them.

Through female representation, I hope to empower my players and show them that running like a girl means running your hardest to the ball, sprinting on breakaways, and stepping up to the challenges by trusting in your own strength.
Having a role model, especially a female one, has positively impacted my life. But looking up to someone isn’t everything.

You have to become your own person and develop your own unique playing and coaching style. Growing into your own individual person is the only way to be a successful role model to younger girls. Those who are looking for support and encouragement. I try to live by the motto “be the coach you wish you had”, because these girls aren’t looking for a superhero; they’re looking for someone who they can relate to.

Someone who has been in their situation and is able to uplift them and show them that despite everything, they do belong.

I am grateful for my model coaches, and I hope they would be proud to see how much I’ve grown, both as a person and as a role model for other young female athletes.
When I play, the only game I know how to play is my own.

I play like a girl, coach like a girl, lead like a girl, and run like a girl.

Edmund Rice Immersion Trip 2026

The Spark That Lit the Flame

Our Edmund Rice Immersion experience, the spark that lit the flame, was born out of ERBB Ireland in 2023. This initiative brought together leaders from across the Edmund Rice network, including ��ý’s Steve Garland and Dom Zimmermann, Joe Martinez (President) and Kristy Kane (Principal) from St. Laurence in Burbank, IL, Mark Donahue (President) and Bob Alberts (Principal) from Brother Rice in Chicago, IL, and Cormac McCart from the Westcourt Centre in Belfast, Ireland.

Monday, March 9 – Belfast

We began our journey in Belfast with a visit to CBS Edmund Rice College, where we were warmly hosted by Jennifer Kennedy, Advocacy Coordinator, and Paul Berne, Principal. We learned about their advocacy initiatives, experienced Highland dancing and traditional Irish music, and enjoyed a meal of Irish stew together.

We then celebrated Mass at St. Mary’s, the oldest Catholic church in Belfast, where intentions were held in our honour. Later, we took part in a walking tour through Short Strand and Shankill Road, where we saw and signed the Peace Wall. We ended the day at Rosemount House, a centre supporting men recovering from addiction, where we shared pizza and participated in a trivia night.

Tuesday, March 10 – Antrim Coast

We travelled along the stunning Antrim Coast and visited the Giant’s Causeway, taking in one of Ireland’s most iconic natural landmarks.

Wednesday, March 11 – Callan & Kilkenny

In Callan, we visited Westcourt, the birthplace of Blessed Edmund Rice. There, we saw the icon, the chapel, a first-class relic, and the Rice family cottage. This was a deeply meaningful experience as we reflected on the origins of Edmund Rice’s life and mission.

We then travelled to Kilkenny and visited CBS Kilkenny, where we were hosted by Principal Tom Clarke. Once again, we learned about their advocacy initiatives, listened to traditional Irish music, and shared a meal together.

Thursday, March 12 – Waterford & Tramore

In Waterford, we visited CBS Mount Sion, the site of the first school founded by Blessed Edmund Rice. We toured the monastery, joined a walking tour in the footsteps of Edmund Rice, visited the chapel, and saw his remains.

Later, in Tramore, we visited CBS Ardscoil Na Mara, where we were hosted by Principal Padraig Cawley and Vice Principal Aoife Denton. We once again learned about their advocacy initiatives, experienced Highland dancing and traditional Irish music, and shared lunch together.

Friday, March 13 – Dublin

We concluded our journey with a day in Dublin, exploring the city as tourists and taking time to reflect on the experiences of the week.

This has been a truly transformative experience. May we never forget the legacy that began when Blessed Edmund Rice looked out his window in Waterford, saw children living in poverty and without access to education, and chose to respond with courage and compassion.

One of the Brothers at Mount Sion shared that he finds the Blessed Edmund Rice prayer both “challenging” and difficult to live out, yet a challenge worth accepting: “Edmund opened his heart to Christ present in those oppressed by poverty and injustice. May we follow his example of faith and generosity. Grant us the courage and compassion of Blessed Edmund as we seek to live lives of love and service.”

We are deeply grateful to Jen, Paul, Aoife, and Padraig for welcoming us so warmly and making us feel like family. Thank you as well to Bridget, Anne, and Matt for your inspiration and for being our family away from home.

A special thank you to Cormac for being the inspiration and facilitator behind this immersion, and for being the spark that lit the flame.

Ash Wednesday Mass & Our Lenten Journey at ��ý

��ý will celebrate Ash Wednesday Mass on Wednesday, February 18th at 9:25am with our celebrant, Father Nick Meisl. As always, parents, family members, and guests are warmly invited to join us for this meaningful celebration as we begin the sacred season of Lent together as a school community.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Church’s 40-day journey toward Easter. During Mass, ashes are placed on our foreheads in the sign of the cross with the words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” or “Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” The ashes are a visible sign of humility, repentance, and our desire to turn our hearts back to God.

The season of Lent is a time of renewal — an opportunity to grow closer to Christ through three key spiritual practices:

Prayer – Deepening our relationship with God through personal and communal prayer.

Fasting – Making small sacrifices to grow in self-discipline and gratitude.

Almsgiving – Caring for those in need through generosity and acts of service.

As a Catholic school inspired by Blessed Edmund Rice, we are especially called during Lent to remember the poor and vulnerable in our community. Students will be encouraged to reflect on how they can live out the Gospel through concrete acts of kindness, generosity, and solidarity.

We look forward to beginning this Lenten journey together as a faith community.

Living the Preferential Option for the Poor

A heartfelt thank you to our entire ��ý community for your generous participation and contributions during our Preferential Option for the Poor Week. Your compassion, leadership, and concrete action truly reflected the Gospel call to place those most in need at the center of our hearts.

We are grateful to share that our student leaders had the opportunity to personally deliver the collected mugs and donated items to Catholic Men’s Charity in Vancouver. A special thank you to Justin Milad, Director of the Men’s Shelter, for welcoming our students, providing a guided tour, and educating them about the important work being done to support men experiencing homelessness. The experience was both eye-opening and deeply meaningful for our students.

We also extend our appreciation to the many students who participated in making heartfelt cards and preparing sandwiches for the men’s shelter in Burnaby. These simple yet powerful acts of service remind us that dignity, compassion, and human connection are at the heart of our Catholic identity.

As we continue through February, this theme beautifully transitions into our Lenten focus on almsgiving. Lent invites us not only to pray and fast, but also to give — generously and intentionally — in service of others. Thank you for helping make ��ý a community where faith is lived through action.

Together, we continue to place Christ first by placing the poor first.

NET Canada Presentation

We are pleased to welcome Jacob Douglas from NET Canada who will be presenting to our Grade 11 and 12 Religion classes on Thursday, February 19th and Friday, February 20th.

Jacob will speak with students about opportunities to grow in faith after high school, including missionary service with NET Canada, gap-year experiences, leadership development, and ways young adults can actively live out their Catholic faith beyond graduation.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our senior students to reflect on how they can continue to deepen their relationship with Christ and serve others as they prepare for life after ��ý.

Want to excel in academics? Need extra help with school assignments? Doing well in your courses and wanting to help others succeed? If ‘Yes” to any of these then, After School Academic Support is the right place for you.

The After School Academic Support offers a wide range of support to students who need help in completing their homework assignments and preparing for any upcoming assessments. Our academically excelling Tutors support their peers and help them to be confident and do well in their academics. Also, Peer Tutors get their Service Hours for the hours that they have tutored. The program runs throughout the year on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 2:45 – 3:45 pm at the Learning Commons. You are free to attend any/all of the days depending on your own schedule.

Euclid Math Contest

Written annually by over 25 000 participants worldwide, the Euclid Contest gives senior-level secondary school students the opportunity to solve innovative problems using their creativity and all of the knowledge they have gained in secondary school mathematics.

The Contest’s mix of short-answer and full-solution questions provides participants with an opportunity to effectively communicate their thinking. Additionally, the final questions in the Euclid are some of the most complex and challenging among all our contests, helping participants build perseverance, a key component of mathematical problem-solving.

The Euclid Contest (Pre-Calculus 12 and/or Calculus 12) will take place on Tuesday, March 31, from 8:30 am to 11:00 am in the library.

We are thinking of those who have been lost, those who have lived through unspeakable terror, and those who have moved to wrap themselves around those affected.

We offer our deepest condolences and support to the students and families, and to everyone in the Tumbler Ridge community.

Loving Father, you sent your Son into the world to redeem us by his Cross and Resurrection. In our shock and confusion, we come before you. To our ��ý Parent Community,

��ý is a Catholic faith and learning community rooted in the call to Learn, Lead, and Serve. Service is not an add-on at ��ý, it is central to who we are.

As an Edmund Rice Christian Brothers school, we are guided by the Seven Essential Elements, which call us to evangelize youth, stand in solidarity with the marginalized, and develop the whole person. At the heart of this mission is service lived out in community.

Since our founding in 1961, servant-leadership has shaped life at ��ý. For generations, parents and guardians have played an essential role in school life supporting events, athletics, clubs, and faith formation. When students see service modeled by the adults in their lives, the lesson becomes real.

Over the past decade, parent volunteer participation has steadily declined. This has created a real and growing challenge for our school community.

All parents and guardians of students attending ��ý are expected to participate in the Parent Participation Program each year. Acceptance to ��ý means joining a shared community, and parent involvement is an essential part of that commitment. We recognize that families have busy schedules, often with two working parents, and the program has been designed with reasonable and attainable expectations.

All program structure, participation options, expectations, and exemptions are outlined on the ��ý Parent Participation Program page. Families are asked to review this information carefully.

Volunteer opportunities and participation tracking are managed through OnVolunteers.com, the school’s designated platform. This will become live in the near future.

Together, as one community, we live our mission to Learn, Lead, and Serve. Forming young people who will go on to help create a more just and caring world.

Join ��ý at this year’s Sun Run!

We are excited to announce that ��ý will have a Sun Run team again this year. Come out and participate with your friends and family! There is a 2.5km or the 10km course. Race day is Sunday, April 19, 2026.

Before registering, please note the following:

��ý is NOT responsible for student supervision or transportation during the Sun Run
��ý may offer some training resources, such as a suggested plan to prepare for
running 10km and may offer some scheduled practice runs. However, please note that
runners are responsible for their own training.
If we have less than 14 members on our team, the team will be disbanded and the
members will be automatically moved into the Individual categories and you will
be responsible for paying the upgrade fees
Youth team technical shirts will have ��ý Knights printed on the back; however, the
Cotton shirts will NOT have a team name on the back due to a limited area of print size
Parents and siblings are welcome to register as part of the Sun Run team, however, the
number of youths must be greater than the number of adults on the team.

Be sure you are on the Youth Team Challenge (before adding your name and details).

A week of competitive Jr. Varsity basketball

The Jr. Boys & Girls Chancellor Tournament tips off today and runs through Saturday, January 17, bringing together talented junior programs in BC for a full slate of competitive basketball.

The Chancellor Tournament has long been a proving ground for young high school athletes, and this week’s matchups are set to bring intensity, energy, and plenty of standout moments on the court.

We welcome our school community, families, and fans to come out, fill the stands, and support our Knights as they compete against strong teams. With the championship on the line, the Jr. Chancellor Tournament is officially underway and it’s shaping up to be an exciting week of high school basketball!
